Now is the time for retailers and wholesalers to remain connected to their customers. This is a far greater need than ever before. Businesses need to optimise all channels – including channels that may be new to them. The future is unknown, so it is important for businesses to maximise an offline and online presence and prepare for the challenges that they face currently and the rollercoaster rides that the future may hold. It will be important for all industry members to take action in the short term but at the same time strategise for the longer term.

The effects of COVID-19 see many businesses facing challenges when it comes to inventory, supply chains, cash flow, rents and many more. Be bold and face these challenges head on. They will not go away so take control and determine strategies to assess, plan and act. It will change your mental approach from panic mode to action mode and allow you to control your actions. Be open and find ways to collaborate and innovate and find avenues to reach out and engage with other businesses navigating this challenging landscape. As an industry, we need to unite to recover and thrive post COVID-19.
OUT OF ADVERSITY ALWAYS COMES OPPORTUNITY Despite the current climate, are there any success stories you have seen during this time? Out of adversity always comes opportunity. There are many examples of businesses pivoting to survive. There are bridal dressmakers making masks and creating gowns for doctors, bakeries pivoting their business to become wholesalers rather than just retailers, restaurants offering inhome personal chefs, gyms and fitness providers turning to virtual workouts, classes and online events, distilleries making hand sanitisers, event staging companies turning to manufacturing and retailing work from home desks and accessories, along with acrylic counter guards as well as retailers creating virtual shopfronts. Retailers have no choice but to adapt to the impacts of Covid-19. Those that can tap into their customer’s needs and wants, activate an omni-channel presence, stay connected to their tribe and evolve their customer experience will be gaining a head start for the next era of retail.

KATE CARNELL AO SPEAKER SERIES: KATE CARNELL AO
THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO SHOP LOCAL AND BUY AUSTRALIAN Meet Kate Carnell AO, the independent advocate for Australian small business owners. Kate’s office works to bring together the many voices within the small business community to promote growth in an absolutely vital sector of our industry. There’s never been a better time to shop local and buy Australian. Small businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic and those swept up in Victoria’s second wave are under enormous pressure right now. Amid all of the bad news though, there is a glimmer of hope – particularly for retailers. That is, more Australians are wanting to buy local. Visits to the Australian Made website have soared in recent months. Facebook likes for the campaign have skyrocketed and Instagram and Twitter followers have grown exponentially. A recently released survey of more than 1000 Australians conducted on behalf of NBN Co, revealed close to half (49%) of respondents had increased their online shopping during the pandemic shutdown period and 70% have been consciously supporting local businesses online. But more than two thirds of those surveyed, said even though they would like to support more local businesses, they were restricted by the limited digital presence.

KATE CARNELL AO It’s clear that small retailers can no longer rely on outdated business models and bricks-and-mortar stores. Digitisation is now essential for small businesses to be truly competitive. This includes having a social media strategy that effectively targets the customer base. The recent Buy from the Bush campaign is an excellent example – in just four months the 275 regional businesses profiled saw an average revenue increase of 300%. The campaign delivered $5 million to those featured small businesses – all of which had an online presence.
PwC modelling estimates small businesses could unlock more than $49 billion of private sector output over a decade by adopting better use of mobile and internet technologies. More than half of that benefit could be realised in rural and regional Australia. From our experience, the most common roadblock to digital adoption has been not knowing where to start. There are a number of online workshops that offer good tips to small businesses. In particular, my office has supported the free Grow with Google sessions that cover everything from managing
your business remotely to helping your business stand out online.
Despite the current climate there are small businesses out there doing well. One that springs to mind is a wool manufacturer on the Gold Coast that specialises in making UGG boots. When flights from China stopped earlier this year, they were among the first wave of small businesses hit by the COVID crisis. Their trade dropped 95% overnight and being several months out from
the Australian winter – they were on the brink. They were worried about their staff, concerned about their overheads and had next to no sales. Their dramatic turnaround happened after posting on a Facebook group called “Australian Made products” – which has over 1 million members. Within a couple of hours of that post, the orders started streaming in. That post resonated because many just assumed their UGG boots were made in Australia. The reality is only 4% of UGG boots are made here in Australia and UGG Since 1974 is one of the only Australian manufacturers.
Demand for Australian Made products can even be seen at the local supermarket.
Aside from using this time to ensure your business has an online presence, I would encourage all small businesses, to make a plan. Sit down with a trusted, accredited financial adviser and make a plan that is tailored to your business.
Just recently, there were reports of an IGA store on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland with the genius idea of putting new “Australian Owned” shelf labels on products.

Maleny Supa IGA shared photos of the ‘wobbler’ labels on Facebook to show its support for Australian owned businesses. The social media post sparked calls by shoppers for the major supermarkets – Woolworths and Coles - to follow suit. It’s been fantastic to see such a groundswell of support for Australian Made products in this crisis and I hope it continues well after this difficult period is over.
For those small business owners experiencing financial stress, the sooner they seek professional advice, the better the outcome will be. Our licensee, Claudia, from Morven in central western Queensland, 700 km North West of Brisbane has an anecdote that we share with licensees when attending Reed Gift Fairs. Morven is a small town on the highway between Brisbane and Darwin serving the local farming community. The Post Office is the only destination for gifts in Morven. Claudia likes to say if a product sold well one Christmas, she can’t do it the next as people in town either brought the gift, received the gift or know someone in town that received the gift. With this in mind Claudia is always looking for something new and different to present to her customers. Everything started to seem better in early May and we had a cracker June, thought that July might continue but the signs are there, we can feel it slowing down again now that Melbourne is in lockdown. Still, we are surrounded by good people and we will continue to ride the 2020 rollercoaster!
Did you know that everything we did until 1st July 2020 involved importing either from the UK, Europe or USA… rather than China? Then the Squirrel Design Studio cards arrived – the first of our ‘Made in Australia‘ product lines – perfect for sending overseas while we can’t travel, and some lovely water colours to keep for just ourselves. Retail Right Now: HOW HAS COVID-19 IMPACTED YOUR BUSINESS? It’s a huge impact we were operating at around 15% of our expectations. It got better but right now we just don’t know what the next week will be like…

We need to remain positive and support each other, spend more time communicating but at the same time make on-line ordering as simple as possible as this is now such a strong upward trend. Time is precious and there will long be a nervousness about face to face contact so we need to work with our sales people to support them and give them the tools they need in this changed world.
No, we are lucky enough to be fully stocked due to a very busy first two and a half months this year and we have containers exported from Europe arriving now. Some stocks are getting patchy while we wait on sea freight but it will all come good in August.

OUR CUSTOMERS LOVE OUR BUSINESS BECAUSE... We have a wonderful connection with them. We are always cheerful, helpful and design new products to showcase at each fair.
A DAY IN THE ‘NEW NORMAL’ IS… Filled with reorganising, cleaning, painting and making our office and warehouse work better than ever before. Each day we get stuck into the tasks we never had time to do. We run two businesses, the head office in Australia and sister operation in California, USA. I am used to working in chaos, always trying to find things and designing in between the cracks of always being on the road or too busy. This strange time has been a blessing for us on many ways – stopping the chaos and demands to allow us to regroup.
COVID-19 AND HOW IT AFFECTED US: We had the best February gift fair ever with so many orders – suddenly, without warning everything stopped. Stores closed, fairs cancelled, customer orders put on hold. It was so confronting and I thought I would start to panic. Then as I gradually realised that this affected everyone, not just us, I could use this time to reorganise and design. – to recreate ourselves in the vacuum of time we suddenly were in. There was so much we never had time for before: catalogues, line sheets, email lists, improving our website and working on our social media, learning new skills for our business. Ringing our customers to see if we could help – inspiring them and helping them get through this. And, most of all, time to design new products.
HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED YOUR TEAM THROUGHOUT THIS? I am encouraging them to get systems in place, to improve the way we work. We have lots of cups of tea and we work together on designing and organizing. It’s fun and very rewarding and we are happy. 33

WHAT HAVE YOU HEARD FROM YOUR CUSTOMERS? Mainly sad feedback. I have encouraged them to use this time to rework their stores changing things around; painting, redoing displays, changing window displays often, leaving little notes in the window for any passing trade. Planning on reopening with a fresh new look, fresh flowers and music playing and scented candles burning. There is so much to do to improve the way we run our businesses.
THOUGHTS ON WHERE THE RETAIL INDUSTRY IS HEADED? I can only speak for small business – we are lucky, as being small we can move quickly changing ourselves to adapt and survive. I believe social media is more important than ever before but we need to be more sophisticated, to understand it better and how to use it all to our advantage. I think we will be just fine as people love to spend and there

is still lots of money out there. But they won’t spend it on the same old – we need to be unique, have a point of difference, give great service... be authentic and truly care. This is the time where we decide if we want to continue. To find our hearts and souls again. To enjoy what we do and do it with all of our heart. If you don’t feel like that about your business perhaps you should be doing something else.
THE SECRET TO GETTING CUSTOMERS BACK: Is to have a good relationship with them, to treat them as you like to be treated. To design new products, to help the customer with advice on how best to display and mainly just listen to them and help solve their problems.

DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW PRODUCTS TO PROMOTE? We are always designing and creating new. Redesigning our booth space, being aware of new trends, colours – you have to keep up, change, adapt. We are popular because we know what OUR customer wants – namely good quality womenswear and whimsical children’s wear; good homewares that are DIFFERENT.

WHAT DOES A DAY IN YOUR ‘NEW NORMAL’ LIFE LOOK LIKE? The ‘new normal day’ starts with a news check on how we and the rest of the world are navigating through this pandemic – and there is usually a sigh of relief that we live where we do! Who would have thought that the ‘Worldometer’ COVID stats site would replace the NSW RFS Fires Near Me app? (Our Ranch is 100 acres of beautiful bush in the Hunter Valley) What a year it has been! Then to the studio to get on with business. Our cycle has changed – and is ever changing. We don’t seem to have ‘boom’ times now (post trade show, retail events) – but rather more consistent work. Bruce oversees wholesale orders and website sales and a lot more personal contact is involved. Our customers’ needs have changed and we need to know how to best help. I’ve had more time to ‘play’, to develop some new ideas – something that I’d normally only get to do in certain quiet times. It’s usually playing with new raw jewellery components, new art works (drawing more trees!), designing different bag styles and tweaking our packaging and displays. We now are proudly ‘plastic free’ in all our packaging only using paper card, custom tissue and cellophane. Yay!
SOMETHING WE MIGHT NOT KNOW BUT WILL BE GLAD FOUND OUT ABOUT YOU/YOUR BUSINESS: My training is not business or retail (although my very first job was with David Jones). I’m a Visual Art/Design teacher – or was for many years. I think that’s why the design, aesthetics, form/function of a product will always be the most important feature of an item and part of the business.
Retail Right Now: HOW HAS COVID-19 IMPACTED YOUR BUSINESS? Sadly our in our first quarter, the COVID-19 shut down reduced our wholesale orders by at least half. Mid-March, we contacted all our retailers who had pending orders from Reed Gift Fairs Sydney to see what they wanted to do; continue, reduce, cancel. The last thing we wanted was to add burden to their stress and commitments – shop rent, employees, finance, etc. Understandably most requested to hold or cancel their orders. BUT we were delighted to find that slowly, as our retail family adjusted and/ or reopened – 90% continued with their orders. We have been blown away by local communities supporting local business and the whole ‘shop small’ movement. It’s had a positive roll-on effect for us and our stockists, especially being an Australian design label/company.
HOW ARE YOU MANAGING YOUR TEAM AT THIS TIME? Our team is small. Since all operations are done here on the Ranch, we’re pretty much in sync with what’s happening in all areas. We are really missing our overseas travel – so much inspiration and motivation comes from our happy travels. So, if anything, managing our direction and motivation is hard at times. I once read some advice – “if you don’t know the next thing to do in creating/maintaining a business – just do something”. So when a dull time hits, we’ve still been doing ‘something’. It may look like an erratic jump from one thing to another, but we hope we are still moving forward and getting some things done that would normally be pushed aside…. like a whole NEW LABEL! (more on that further on)

WHAT FEEDBACK HAVE YOU GOT FROM YOUR CUSTOMERS ON HOW IT IS TO BE IN RETAIL RIGHT NOW? Our stockists are telling us that retail life is ever changing and TIRING. Those who didn’t have a retail website have had the enormous task of putting one together in a limited time frame. And those who were not so keen on social media (guilty) have had to up-the-anti. Shop owners have been SO innovative and creative in so many different ways just to serve their customers – virtual store tours, pre-booked openings, phone/ web orders and free deliveries – all still working under their state regulations which are also bouncing to and fro. They have been working double time and there seems to be a pressure to keep stock new and fresh, even more than usual. The heartening result is that their customers – their community – have reciprocated by consciously supporting small business.
Your Thoughts On: Resilience: We can (and have been) be resilient in tough times – and 2020 has proven to be the toughest yet. But there is a limit of how much we can all bend before we break. We align ourselves to be more creators rather than simply wholesalers. Our job continues to teach the shopper the value of what they are buying, bringing awareness of what is well designed and unique. opposed to what is mass produced. Telling the story behind each artwork and how it came to appear on a shoulder bag or keep mug. Not necessarily following the latest fad, but having a natural aesthetic, a quality make and lasting appeal.
THE SECRETS TO GETTING A CUSTOMER TO RETURN FOR MORE: Rancho is a celebration of the natural and simple – so we hope our products appeal to likeminded lovers. We design and, in many cases, make what we sell. We know our products inside out, so I think that helps to reassure our customers of the quality and service they will receive if they buy/ stock a Rancho product. People want to know that they can purchase a product/range again – if it has been successful for them, and at the same time constantly be inspired by what’s new. Rancho tries to offer both bestsellers and new ranges each season and can even make custom requests with some products.
Looking Forward: DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW PRODUCTS TO PROMOTE? Yes, Yes YES! Introducing … ‘via SMiTH’ For the last two seasons a few beautiful sterling silver rings and earrings have appeared in the Rancho jewellery range. They have been so popular and different that this style just had to stand alone. via SMiTH is a sterling silver jewellery range, designed by me and hand crafted by silversmiths in Bali. In Bali, the traditional silversmiths are simply called ‘smiths’. So ‘via SMiTH’ is a lovey double pun! The silver workshop is a small

retailers are trying to juggle a hundred things and time is valuable. Rather than releasing all of our new products at a trade show – we will be updating our shops month to month via e-newsletters. New products are a little slower arriving because production chains have slowed but since we design everything – we can control the quality. Expect new bags and mug designs in September. Our feelers are out. We try to change to meet our stockists needs and try to gauge what shoppers are attracted to in this crazy time – other than face masks! And when times are tough we have the ranch for constant solace… our happy place.

Retail Right Now: HOW HAS COVID-19 IMPACTED YOUR BUSINESS? It was like being pushed out of a plane with no parachute. Like many, our sales plummeted in mid-March and for April and May, they were down over 70%. June is usually terrible, but was surprisingly much more positive and July has also tracked better than expected, we have been pleasantly surprised by the recent positive uplift.
Although our sales plummeted, we have never been busier. It was important to me and my wonderful team that we did not waste this downtime, but we used it to develop wonderful new products and amazing new sales tools. I am delighted to announce we have over 300 new products to offer for this season, an amazing new interactive website, improvements to our iPad sales system for our sales team and our most exciting new sales tool – our virtual trade fair, for those that cannot make it to a fair this season.

WHAT FEEDBACK HAVE YOU GOT FROM YOUR CUSTOMERS ON HOW IT IS TO BE IN RETAIL RIGHT NOW? The feedback is both heartbreaking and very encouraging. Some of our long-term customers are finding things still really tough especially in Victoria and we have sadly seen some close their doors, many others have had a quicker recovery, although full recovery is likely to be years away.
Your Thoughts On: WHERE THE RETAIL INDUSTRY WILL LAND: It will land on shaky legs. Most retailers fell over (or were pushed!), many are getting back up and trying to shake off the last few months. It will take a while but those who make it through will recover. They will do things differently many are already adapting. Resilience: I have been amazed by my conversations with our customers. Many are focusing on the positives and that gives me hope and confidence that our industry is resilient and robust. It has taken a beating, but we will prevail. The secrets to getting a customer to return for more: Urban focuses on customer service, caring about their unique situations, we don’t sell direct to consumers, we ensure exclusivity of our products, we are always evolving and providing great new Australia designed products at affordable prices.
Looking Forward: DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW PRODUCTS TO PROMOTE? Although for obvious reasons we were unable to travel overseas this season to source new products, we are delighted to launch over 300 new products for the Spring Summer 2020 season, with 100s more in development.

survives. I think we all need to be cautious during this time but not scared. There is opportunity out there and we all need to adapt to the ever-changing environment. HOW HAVE YOU HAD TO INNOVATE YOUR CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE? We have had to work fully remote during this period, leveraging Zoom, Skype and Google Hangouts. We are living in a hyper connected world and the technology during this time is thankfully already there and waiting to be used. We spent a great deal of time reviewing our products, services and have adapted new services to align to the current business landscape, offering relevant services and value in an efficient and cost effective manner. With over 20+ years of experience and having lived and worked through both prior GFC’s, those experiences were immediately transferrable and we have been instrumental in helping businesses and their leaders navigate times of uncertainty helping them overcome some serious challenges and tailoring services to suit the moment. We’ve spent more time listening to truly understand the state of play out there and from that we can learn from each and every interaction. The remote nature of our work has bolstered relationships, deepening them in some way, we know how challenging times are for some right now, but often times a really rough plan is all people need to take steps forward and improve the plan from there. From our perspective it’s all about mindset, work ethic and doubling down on proven experience to help anyone through these challenging times and most importantly, we love doing it.

HOW ARE YOU MANAGING YOUR TEAM AT THIS TIME? We have changed our normal routine up a little, we’ve incorporated daily morning standup meetings done via video conferencing, working from our usual task lists and weekly brainstorming sessions to promote creativity and encourage ideation at all levels, both for our customers and to improve our internal back office processes. We have spent a great deal of time automating a lot of our back end so we can spend all our time in the business. There’s a whole different take on measuring productivity and we focus on outcomes and our customers’ needs drive, motivate and inspire us to keep going and to always find ways to improve a little more each time.
WHAT FEEDBACK HAVE YOU GOT FROM YOUR CUSTOMERS ON HOW IT IS TO BE IN RETAIL RIGHT NOW? Unfortunately we have seen many of our existing clients closing down, an unfortunate statistic, but very real and sobering to the current state of play. A lot of our customers were not only been affected by Covid-19, but were heavily impacted by our recent bushfires, it’s a devastating situation for many having been dealt some serious challenges. This made it almost impossible for them to continue. Other feedback includes a decline in sales for both products and services along with a rapid decline in customer sentiment, it’s part and parcel of the shock people are working through in their lives, we do expect some level of normality to return in months ahead. Business today and more than ever, needs to go back to basics and its ‘why’, spending more time thinking about who their customer is and if their service or product is reaching them with the intended intentionality. The whole situation has caused so many people to revisit their value propositions to the extent they have had to look really hard at how they were doing things, the capital needed to continue on and the impact that slow trade has had to their bottom lines and livelihoods. Retail is a challenging sector, however with every challenge rises plenty of opportunity and it’s incredibly important that

businesses begin planning the path ahead now, starting today, don’t leave this too late, strategise, test, explore options, collaborate, consider new ways of generating leads, sales, flex relationships, work together closely with customers and restore some faith in yourself and those around you in every conversation that beneath the veil of uncertainty lies a bounty of opportunity, but as cliched as it sounds to ‘know yourself’ we keep coming back to this time and time again and believe this is key to making forward progress in the ‘new’ world that’s about to recommence, On a positive note we have had clients who have taken this time of crisis to reinvent their brands and deliver innovative ways to sell their products and services. Where bricks and mortar have really suffered is through lack of online presence, for many we have rescued their businesses and re-instilled hope to what was once an unimaginable, unscalable challenge, to becoming a source of inspiration, certainty and the unfolding of a new chapter. Many have reached out to Kreo Inc to assist them on their new journey and we have been working day and night 6 days a week ever since!

Spend some time analyzing your supply chain and see where the risks lie, especially around delivery times lagging due to the spike in parcels, how can this be eased? If there’s way too much resting on one particular vendor, now would be a good time to explore contingencies and other options, the entire world’s supply chain was chocked, so it’s important to pay attention and spot the opportunities as they relate to you. Your teams are what help drive the business so if you employ staff, making sure you have the right talent in your business to grow and thrive is critical. Reassess the roles, are they relevant, what’s missing, can those responsibilities be absorbed, where are the opportunities to expand your operation or perhaps bolster and support further the existing.
HOW TO PLAN FOR A RETAIL RESET IN THE DOWNTIME Planning for a retail reset is something not many have done or had to do but is more necessary now than ever. As expressed more and more, not a single person has playbook right now but in the absence of anything, it’s important to take a methodical approach to resetting your business. This includes flexing on your suppliers, perhaps developing new terms of trade together, another is to spend more time in the business than just running the day to day workings of the business, so automating your backend is of prime importance. With the changing retail landscape, it’s key to pivot and adjust to the changing needs of the consumer where we see spending behavior change where purchases are left very late in the sales cycle, so it’s important to find ways to get them to trust you and find more ways to defer spend where practical. Ultimately if someone wants something they will find it, so it’s key to
What consumers need from you right now is guidance from experienced practitioners, it’s important to have the right team working on your problems. We have been involved in far too many a ‘project rescue’ that have been caused by 3rd party providers unable to deliver on their promise and abandon the project entirely to our surprise. Your promise is what you’ll be remembered and measured from, if you aren’t delivering now, you’ll never survive a single second in the ‘new world’, so spending some time to really iron out things you never had the time to focus on, is probably the most important process you’ll ever go through, you’ve got this!

The one focal point that I deemed a nonnegotiable was that of communication. Staying in touch, checking in – it is what all businesses need to do. Within our business currently everything is now done virtually and planning for the future integrates the possibility of remote and/or face to face engagement. We had to find out the changing needs of our clients and how we, could meet and exceed those needs.
With the start of isolation and significant changes to the business, Retail Life implemented 3 key focuses: Be Retail Ready – Retail Ready Tactics across social media and the implementation of FaceTime Tactic Sessions, Zoom Mentoring Sessions and Remote Express Sessions. We are also launching our Retail Ready Tactics Podcast Series! Retail Reset Game Plan – developed to support and motivate retailers to develop a Retail Reset Strategy and take action to maximise their sales and profitability both now and in the future Get Retail Savvy Community – We meet hundreds of retailers every year and know that most of them do not have the essential business foundations in place that will allow them to grow, expand and drive business longevity. With that in mind we are busy behind the scenes preparing for the launch of our Education Community. We will offer an integration of online and offline education which will merge

to form our Community of Retail Lifers whose main priority will be to Get Retail Savvy. The aim being to learn and then come together to drive a collaborative approach to business performance and development. It is like conducting a think tank for your business but using the minds and talents of likeminded retailers – extremely exciting!
WHERE THE RETAIL INDUSTRY WILL LAND: I believe that the new retail landscape will see a far quicker and prioritised adoption of technology. Collaboration between all parties – landlords, wholesalers, suppliers and retailers will be the way of the future and fundamental to bringing retail experiences to life. Customer connection and loyalty will be paramount to retail success. Independent retailers need to take advantage of the inexpensive and easy to use technology options available to create platforms to communicate with their customers. It will be imperative to know and understand target markets intimately and adapt and deliver on their needs and wants. Effective, consistent and regular communication is critical so that retail businesses can stay in the forefront of their customers minds and build a committed, strong and loyal tribe. Resilience: Australians are renowned for their tenacity and ability to dig deep. From bushfires to floods, droughts and now COVID-19 Australian retailers will reset their retail compass and survive. We will see innovation, collaboration and a strong sense of resilience transform businesses and individuals. We will see opportunities open new doors, new careers path and I believe a greater balanced lifestyle where the importance of self-care, time with family and a stronger focus on health and wellbeing integrated into all workplaces.
