FRENCH TWIST COLLECTION Interview with Charlotte M., VP of Design HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DESIGNING JEWELRY? 12 years. WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE FRENCH TWIST RIBBON NECKLACE—HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS DESIGN? WHAT INSPIRED YOU?
The original inspiration was our Natasha Bib style from years ago—we wanted to create a modern interpretation. We loved the materials and the softness of the original ribbon, and wanted to combine those elements with some modern chain and styling.
the original are blown up, folded in new directions, and encrusted with pieces of the past and present—like the pearls and spikes that really bring it to life. The tension between the ribbon cluster and the modern curb chain is what makes the statement. WHAT ARE SOME WORDS OR IDEAS THAT CAME TO MIND WHEN YOU WERE DREAMING UP THIS DESIGN?
Past meets present, classic meets edge, feminine meets cool. What would Coco do? WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE?
Once the inspiration is clear, it usually starts out with materials and playing with different combinations and layouts. We have chains, stones, parts of vintage samples, WHAT ARE THE STANDOUT ELEMENTS OF THIS STYLE? and previously developed samples all The ribbon cluster combined with mixed over a table, and we just play with endless materials is truly the intersection of vintage combinations of material and color. From and modern-day Stella. The rosettes from the outset, there’s also a lot of thought that goes into who will be wearing this style, where she’ll be wearing it, and why it will be special to her. Thinking about where the style ends up is critical when we're building it. Once we’ve worked with the materials and have come up with our favorite layouts, we photograph the components and build the style on the computer to really bring it to life and complete the sketch. This way we’re able to easily change colors and experiment, making slight tweaks as the last step before it’s sent out to be physically made. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO WEAR THIS NECKLACE?
I love it styled asymmetrically—where the ribbon portion is high enough so the chain falls down in a full u-shape. This way also looks amazing with a longer necklace layered underneath.
