In this study, after the detailed description of the structure and characteristics of an LMS, a sample LMS was developed and used as a supportive tool in a traditional classroom instruction. Although online education provides opportunities to people who traditionally do not have access t... more Although online education provides opportunities to people who traditionally do not have access to universities, there is a need for more empirical studies to gain better understanding on how to deliver quality online education, especially when the subject of the course is related with IT. Learning to program is a complicated process. This study aims to find out the difference between students’ performance in online and face-to-face settings during a computer programming course in the fall semester of the year 2010. The study was conducted at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Istanbul University. This online course is one of the required courses for students majoring in Mathematics. It is delivered in a learning management system developed in house through a project funded by Istanbul University. The goal is to introduce students with structured programming using the programming language C. Two topics -“Functions in C Programming” and “Loops in C Programming” - were presented to students online and face to face. The total of 62 students formed two groups: the online and face to face groups. The content analysis statistical technique is used, as well as a questionnaire consisting of open-ended questions, which performed as a data collection tool to find out the views of the students in context to the process. Skin cancer is a common disease among middle-aged and elderly white-skinned people. It is divided... more Skin cancer is a common disease among middle-aged and elderly white-skinned people. It is divided into many types in terms of medical criteria. Malign melanoma is one of the most dangerous and fatal cancer types, it can be treated if detected early. The main focus of this paper is to provide a precise, effective, robust and automated way to segment the lesion in order to facilitate the classification of the lesion with high accuracy during the early diagnosis of skin cancer. This process consists of two stages. In the first stage, image processing techniques (Image Enhancement, Linear Filtering, and Image Restoration) are used to obtain images free of artifacts such as hair and ruler marks. The second stage which is the important part of this paper is to modify a U-Net architecture and propose a 46-layered structure of U-Net to obtain a successful lesion segmentation rate. In this study, experiments were performed on two different U-Net architectures (U-Net 32, and U-Net 46).

With this study, we aimed to develop a recommendation system that will direct the customer to the appropriate campaign. With the data received from a private bank, credit card transactions of the users were analyzed, and spending habits were modeled. We aimed to recommend the most suitable campaign to the users through the created models. Within the scope of the study, 662.088 credit card transactions performed by 4997 customers within three months were analyzed, and three campaigns were proposed for each customer as a result of the study. The ALS (Alternating Least Square) algorithm was used on Spark to establish the recommendation system. The primary purpose of the study is to increase customer satisfaction by finding unique users based on spending habits instead of campaigns that are applied collectively to customers by making a personalized campaign offer.
Worldwide, open-ended questions that require short answers have been used in many exams in fields... more Worldwide, open-ended questions that require short answers have been used in many exams in fields of science, such as the International Student Assessment Program (PISA), the International Science and Maths Trends Research (TIMSS). However, multiple-choice questions are used for many exams at the national level in Turkey, especially high school and university entrance exams. This study aims to develop an objective and useful automatic scoring model for open-ended questions using machine learning algorithms. Within the scope of this aim, an automated scoring model construction study was conducted on four Physics questions at a University level course with the participation of 246 undergraduate students. The short-answer scoring was handled through an approach that addresses students’ answers in Turkish. Model performing machine learning classification techniques such as SVM (Support Vector Machines), Gini, KNN (k-Nearest Neighbors), and Bagging and Boosting were applied after data preprocessing. The score indicated the accuracy, precision and F1-Score of each predictive model of which the AdaBoost.M1 technique had the best performance. In this paper, we report on a short answer grading system in Turkish, based on a machine learning approach using a constructed dataset about a Physics course in Turkish. This study is also the first study in the field of open-ended exam scoring in Turkish.
In this work, an efficient low bit rate image coding/compression method based on the quadtree-bas... more In this work, an efficient low bit rate image coding/compression method based on the quadtree-based partitioned universally classified energy and pattern building blocks (QB-UCEPB) is introduced. The proposed method combines low bit rate robustness and variable-sized quantization benefits of the well-known classified energy and pattern blocks (CEPB) method and quadtree-based (QB) partitioning technique, respectively. In the new method, first, the QB-UCEPB is constructed in the form of variable length block size thanks to the quadtree-based partitioning rather than fixed block size partitioning which was employed in the conventional CEPB method. The QB-UCEPB is then placed to the transmitter side as well as receiver side of the communication channel as a universal codebook manner. Every quadtree-based partitioned block of the input image is encoded using three quantities: image block scaling coefficient, the index number of the QB-UCEB and the index number of the QB-UCPB. These quantities are sent from the transmitter part to the receiver part through the communication channel. Then, the quadtree-based partitioned input image blocks are reconstructed in the receiver part using a decoding algorithm, which exploits the mathematical model that is proposed. Experimental results show that using the new method, the computational complexity of the classical CEPB is substantially reduced. Furthermore, higher compression ratios, PSNR and SSIM levels are achieved even at low bit rates compared to the classical CEPB and conventional methods such as SPIHT, EZW and JPEG2000.
