The strata cut by this borehole can be correlated with those defined by Sakınç et al. (1999) and with Neogene deposits on land between the Ulubat (Apolyont) and Manyas lakes ( Ergül et al., 1986). ...

As a result, the high anomaly values observed in the map were attributed to volcanic formations. The lower anomaly values were attributed to the effect of sediment cover. Tectonically structural elements existent in this area are evaluated as fault anomalies on the profiles in the magnetic map. The calculated average depth (1.5 - 8 km) values obtained during this model study are consistent with the former studies.

In fresh or quasifresh lakes, some extra technologies are needed. For the basic and fresh waters of Lake Iznik, we have designed and tried a special sparker container and also some new electrode array configurations. The results some technical problems encountered will be discussed. Single electrode transducer case, which means that the energy discharging through it will be many times higher if compared to the multi-electrode case, was found to be most practical for this particular expedition. It was in fact rather successful even the vertical resolution decreased about 2.5-3 times. Obtained shallow seismic profiles are used to image the stratigraphic and tectonic setting in the lake. Two unconformable main seismic units, which are separated by a major eroded surface 30-35 m below water surface, could be detected in the sub-surface fluvio-lecustrine sediments.

This paper presents recently collected shallow high-resolution seismic data to discriminate the sedimentary successions, each characterized by distinctive stratigraphic patterns on both sides of the Ganos Fault. Two main units, namely U1 and U2, and three para-sequences (U1a, U1b and U1c) were identified, depending on their internal reflection patterns, accommodation depths as well as the presence of conformity and the unconformity surfaces. The thickness of Unit U1 reaches its maximum at the northern side of the Ganos Fault; it is much thinner to the south. The para-sequences of U1b and U1c have “progradation” and “aggradation to progradation” depositional characters, respectively. This probably implies fluvial deposition controlled by sea- level fluctuations. Unit U1b can o...
