However, it's generally accepted that sustainable development is the one that ensure a good balance between social, economic and environmental components and qualities of actual society without compromising the capacity of future generations to succeed. To determine if a city is or not sustainable, we must consider many indicators, being transportation one of the most important ones. It is a widely accepted view that public transport is a naturally 'sustainable' form of transport compared to other modes mainly because it competes with the private car and it is the private car that generates significant economic, environmental and social problems in developing and developed cities. Based on an extensive literature review, this paper aims to provide a better understanding of 'sustainable transportation' concept and how it contributes to making Melbourne one of the most liveable cities in the world.
