La tecnologia è entrata senza troppa difficoltà anche nelle industrie più vicine al campo artistico di cui la moda è probabilmente il maggior esponente. Nel Fashion design ogni livello di produzione, dalla creazione di stoffe al taglio, dalla confezione alla vendita, viene spinto verso nuove direzioni che permettano di giungere a numeri sempre più elevati di clienti e, contemporaneamente, risparmiare sui costi di produzione. Negli ultimi anni, ricercatori di vari paesi hanno sviluppato materiali innovativi e “multiuso”: stoffe intessute di microchip che ci permettano di rendere i nostri vestiti dei “computer lavabili”, organze “fatte di luce” grazie alla fibra ottica, t-shirt intelligenti e abiti “mimetici” che si fondono completamente con l’ambiente che li circonda. Esistono poi sfilate completamente digitali, camerini virtuali tramite i quali i clienti possono provare gli abiti direttamente dalle loro case o, come nel caso di Macy’s, in negozi dotati di “specchi magici”. Altra rivoluzione è costituita dall'avvento dei body scanner, macchine in grado di mappare il corpo e ricostruirlo digitalmente, dando modo di creare capi d’abbigliamento perfettamente calzanti. Di questa serie di ricerche in particolare si andrà a svolgere uno studio approfondito, analizzandone gli sviluppi e le innovazioni, sino ad arrivare ad i moderni software di simulazione tridimensionale per il Fashion design. Simile alla moda, nel suo intento di creare prodotti indossabili e di origine artistica, è l’ambito del costume teatrale, che però appare fermo a tecniche e modi di pensare oramai datati. Il teatro in generale non ha saputo adattarsi e farsi ispirare fino in fondo dallo sviluppo tecnologico, che si applica solamente a livello di messa in scena mentre risulta quasi o totalmente assente a livello di creazione. Soprattutto per quanto riguarda le grandi produzioni, come nel teatro d’opera, nel campo del costume, sarebbe utile ed opportuno fare uso delle tecniche e tecnologie di cui si dota la moda, accelerando e semplificando più passaggi della creazione di un progetto di costume, dalla sua ideazione alla effettiva costruzione. A dimostrazione di ciò, si è provveduto all’ideazione di un progetto di costume per il Flauto magico di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Partendo da un’atmosfera iniziale, che porta i personaggi dell’opera verso una dimensione animalesca e misteriosa, e passando per lo sviluppo di bozzetti su carta, si giunge alla costruzione digitale del modello di ciò che si andrà a mettere in scena ed alla sua relativa simulazione, che si potrà evolvere nella confezione vera e propria di un abito.
