W... more This research work examines the increase in urban expansion of Ado-Ekiti which started in 1955. When self-Government started in the then western Nigeria, Ado-Ekiti became the administrative headquarter of the then Ekiti division. Since the creation of the then Old Ondo-State in 1976, Ado-Ekiti has continued to witness steady growth. The rate of growth doubled when the city was pronounced the capital of Ekiti state in 1996. This growth has caused absorption of rural settlements, particularly those inhabited by the migrant tenant farmers. The aim of this work is to identify the settlements that have been absorbed or relocated from 1956 to 2006. This will help to know which rural settlements are enclosed in the sprawling area of the city and proffer solution to the encroachment. Using an Ordinance Survey Map that indicates the settlements, a total of 53 settlements within Ado-Ekiti metropolis were discovered. The problem of waste disposal is a major concern in these areas of the city, being the reference point in this research work. Dirty environment would have been kept clean if only people were made to embrace the business opportunities in Waste Management as it puts money in their pockets. Both primary and secondary sources of data collection were accessed to gather relevant information for the work. The sample frame used is the total number of housing units in the six selected slum areas of the city. The total number of housing units in the area was 7858 out of which 2.5%, amounting to 200 housing units was selected as sample size with the aid of systematic random sampling. It was done to study the adequacy of the commercial functions which the town performs to the inhabitants of the town and the surrounding towns in the region. The establishment of the University coupled with improved economy has encouraged migration as people have moved to the town temporarily or permanently to benefit of its functions. As these people have come to the town, there is a need for their commercial needs to be met.
