Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani, an established Islamic cleric who popularized the concept of Darul Mua’ahda in India, motivated Muslims towards the territorial nationalism rather than creating a nation based on religious considerations. In 1937, Maulana addressed a political meeting in Delhi and made this clear: “Today a nation is made on the basis of the country. In his recent visit to Delhi on 25 September, the Syrian Grand Mufti, Shaikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun cautioned India to pay heed to " external calls of Wahhabi jihad ". He particularly urged Indian Muslims and madrasas to take cognizance of this foreign fanatic creed. " Steer clear of mercenaries and infiltrators " and " stay unified against the Wahhabi extremism " , he said. This was also endorsed by the Syrian ambassador to India, Riyadh Abbas, when he stated, " Wahhabism is the enemy of people and Islam and Indians should not take calls of Wahhabis. " Expressing serious concerns over the " sectarian terrorism " playing havoc across the Muslim world, Hassoun averred that it also endangered India's syncretic and pluralistic ethos. The Syrian Grand Mufti's advice to the Indian government to act cautiously while dealing with the theoretical onslaught of Wahhabism, came at a critical juncture. But it appears that many analysts have overlooked its significant ideological dynamics. They failed to assess as to why the topmost Islamic authority in Syria cautioned Indian Muslims not to pay heed to " external calls of jihad from Wahhabis " and why there should be a serious deliberation of all religious heads on this issue to safeguard India. Wahhabism is not a mainstream Islamic sect like Sunni or Shia. Rather, it is an extremist ideology based on an exclusivist takfirist theology propounded by the medieval theologian Sheikh Ibn Taimiyah and promulgated by the 18th century orthodox Islamist ideologue, Sheikh Ibn Abdul Wahhab Najdi. In his masterpiece in Arabic, Kitab al-Tawhid (Book on Monotheism), Najdi wrote: " Islam of a man can never be accepted, even if he abandons polytheism, unless he shows hostility towards the disbelievers and infidels, not only in his/her words but also in actions…Kufr and Islam are opposed to each other. The progress of one is possible only at the expense of the other and co-existences between these two contradictory faiths is unthinkable…The honour of Islam lies in insulting Kufr (disbelief) and Kafir (disbeliever). One who respects the Kafirs, dishonours the Muslims. To respect them does not merely mean honouring them and assigning them a seat of honour in any assembly, but it also implies keeping company with them or showing considerations to them. They should be kept at an arm's length like dogs… " Such exclusivist writings created the virulent theology of takfirism—declaring a Muslim apostate or beyond the pale of Islam—and thus justifying the wanton killings of innocent civilians across the world. An objective reading of Islamic history unravels this widespread global and historical phenomenon. The 14th century radical Islamist jurist, Ibn Taimiyah's famous Fatwa of Mardin, which is mentioned in the 28th part of his book, Majmu'a al-Fatawa, justified the massacre of the non-combatant civilians of Mardin—a town located on the border between Syria and Turkey. The ISIS' mouthpiece Dabiq (Issue 6, page 40) has also quoted this pernicious fatwa of Ibn Taymiyyah as theological justification for the assassination of moderate Muslim scholars and civilians declared " apostates " in its view. But in a sharp rebuttal to this ferocious fatwa of Mardin, mainstream Muslim scholars, particularly the Hanafi and Sufi scholars of his time, refuted Ibn Taimiyah. They countered one more fatwa issued by Ibn Taymiyyah, which encouraged those engaged in " jihad ma'al kuffar " (war against the infidels). Now, contrast Ibn Taimiyah with the present-day chief Islamist jurist and the ideological icon of the Ikhwan al-Muslimin (Muslim Brotherhood) —whose fatwas are authoritative for the global Wahhabi-Salafi community—the Qatar-based Salafist cleric, Shaikh Yusuf Al Qaradawi. In fact, Taimiyah's fatwa of Mardin is synonymous with Qaradawi's clerical call to kill the Syrian armed forces, civilians, religious clerics and even the common citizens, whom he calls " ignorants " and " illiterates ". He blatantly states that it is permitted [in religion] to target " anyone who supports the Syrian regime " .

Seven decades of the Independence have passed, but Muslims are yet to demonstrate and validate their allegiance to the motherland. Their loyalty is often debated and tested. This is distressing. But more appalling is that, in this political slugfest, the contributions of the erstwhile Muslim freedom fighters, particularly the Indian ulema, have gone wholly overlooked. In our textbooks, students are hardly exposed to the ulema's herculean efforts for the country's liberation, while the contributions of a few others are blown out of proportion. But the fact is: Indian ulema along with the great Hindu and Sikh freedom fighters, rendered momentous contributions in an indefatigable struggle to liberate the country from the shackles of the British imperialists. The ulema or maulvis along with the Pundits and Muslim zamindars along with the Hindu traders significantly sacrificed, particularly in the first independence struggle in May, 1857.

But it brings us both bliss and cautiousness. While we rejoice God's grace throughout the month-long feast, we are put in a tough spiritual test, not only in our fasts but also in the entire practical life. In the true sense, one becomes a Sa'im or Rozadar (the one who keep fasts) only when he/ she eschews all spiritual vices—hate, anger, jealousy, lying, cheating, backbiting and other evils. Merely engaging in a physical exercise of hunger and thirst without achieving this spiritual state, is not the end. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) categorically stated it: "Whoever leaves the food and drink, but does not give up falsehood, evil deeds and badmouthing to others, Allah is not in need of his/her fasts. [Bukhari] Ramzan requires a complete spiritual inclination towards the achievement of the ultimate purpose of fasting— Taqwa (spiritual consciousness and righteousness)— as articulated in the Quran: O you who have believed, fasting is decreed upon you as it was decreed upon those before you, so that you may become righteous ". (2:183). Taqwa is the core essence of fasting in Islam. Muslims are ordained in the month of Ramzan to get well-trained to lead the entire life with full cognizance of the divinity, righteousness and spiritual consciousness. Enjoining good and forbidding evil (amr bil m'aruf and nahy anil munkar) is the means to achieve this noble end. As the Qur'an states in the above verse, fasting was prescribed for the earlier prophets and their peoples with the same purpose, which is; attaining taqwa and warding off the evil. For instance, fasting is prescribed in Judaism as an 'inner-directed' and 'outer-directed' act of virtue. The Jews traditionally observed two types of fasts—collective and individual. The former were meant to seek the mercy of the Almighty for the whole community, while the latter were kept as atonement for the sins. There are regular fasts in the Jewish jurisprudence such as the Day of Sabbath, which has the greatest significance as enunciated in the Mosaic Law.

Surah al-Kauthar has been discussed and explained in both the mainstream Sunni and Shia tafsir and more especially in Sufi mystical exegesis of the Qur’an. Regrettably, our collective negligence and intellectual stagnation have concealed the pioneering contributions of great Indian mystics in the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment, human welfare and common goodwill. Those loudly claiming to represent the Sawad-Azam (mainstream Muslims) should take cognizance of the worrying fact that a large part of the Indian Sufis’ literature has not yet been published and is in the shape of manuscripts for ages. And that is precisely why they are misrepresented and sometimes defamed by the present-day ignoramuses.

In his recent visit to Delhi on 25 September, the Syrian Grand Mufti, Shaikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun cautioned India to pay heed to " external calls of Wahhabi jihad ". He particularly urged Indian Muslims and madrasas to take cognizance of this foreign fanatic creed. " Steer clear of mercenaries and infiltrators " and " stay unified against the Wahhabi extremism " , he said. This was also endorsed by the Syrian ambassador to India, Riyadh Abbas, when he stated, " Wahhabism is the enemy of people and Islam and Indians should not take calls of Wahhabis. " Expressing serious concerns over the " sectarian terrorism " playing havoc across the Muslim world, Hassoun averred that it also endangered India's syncretic and pluralistic ethos. The Syrian Grand Mufti's advice to the Indian government to act cautiously while dealing with the theoretical onslaught of Wahhabism, came at a critical juncture. But it appears that many analysts have overlooked its significant ideological dynamics. They failed to assess as to why the topmost Islamic authority in Syria cautioned Indian Muslims not to pay heed to " external calls of jihad from Wahhabis " and why there should be a serious deliberation of all religious heads on this issue to safeguard India. Wahhabism is not a mainstream Islamic sect like Sunni or Shia. Rather, it is an extremist ideology based on an exclusivist takfirist theology propounded by the medieval theologian Sheikh Ibn Taimiyah and promulgated by the 18th century orthodox Islamist ideologue, Sheikh Ibn Abdul Wahhab Najdi. In his masterpiece in Arabic, Kitab al-Tawhid (Book on Monotheism), Najdi wrote: " Islam of a man can never be accepted, even if he abandons polytheism, unless he shows hostility towards the disbelievers and infidels, not only in his/her words but also in actions…Kufr and Islam are opposed to each other. The progress of one is possible only at the expense of the other and co-existences between these two contradictory faiths is unthinkable…The honour of Islam lies in insulting Kufr (disbelief) and Kafir (disbeliever). One who respects the Kafirs, dishonours the Muslims. To respect them does not merely mean honouring them and assigning them a seat of honour in any assembly, but it also implies keeping company with them or showing considerations to them. They should be kept at an arm's length like dogs… " Such exclusivist writings created the virulent theology of takfirism—declaring a Muslim apostate or beyond the pale of Islam—and thus justifying the wanton killings of innocent civilians across the world. An objective reading of Islamic history unravels this widespread global and historical phenomenon. The 14th century radical Islamist jurist, Ibn Taimiyah's famous Fatwa of Mardin, which is mentioned in the 28th part of his book, Majmu'a al-Fatawa, justified the massacre of the non-combatant civilians of Mardin—a town located on the border between Syria and Turkey. The ISIS' mouthpiece Dabiq (Issue 6, page 40) has also quoted this pernicious fatwa of Ibn Taymiyyah as theological justification for the assassination of moderate Muslim scholars and civilians declared " apostates " in its view. But in a sharp rebuttal to this ferocious fatwa of Mardin, mainstream Muslim scholars, particularly the Hanafi and Sufi scholars of his time, refuted Ibn Taimiyah. They countered one more fatwa issued by Ibn Taymiyyah, which encouraged those engaged in " jihad ma'al kuffar " (war against the infidels). Now, contrast Ibn Taimiyah with the present-day chief Islamist jurist and the ideological icon of the Ikhwan al-Muslimin (Muslim Brotherhood) —whose fatwas are authoritative for the global Wahhabi-Salafi community—the Qatar-based Salafist cleric, Shaikh Yusuf Al Qaradawi. In fact, Taimiyah's fatwa of Mardin is synonymous with Qaradawi's clerical call to kill the Syrian armed forces, civilians, religious clerics and even the common citizens, whom he calls " ignorants " and " illiterates ". He blatantly states that it is permitted [in religion] to target " anyone who supports the Syrian regime " .

But it brings us both bliss and cautiousness. While we rejoice God's grace throughout the month-long feast, we are put in a tough spiritual test, not only in our fasts but also in the entire practical life. In the true sense, one becomes a Sa'im or Rozadar (the one who keep fasts) only when he/ she eschews all spiritual vices—hate, anger, jealousy, lying, cheating, backbiting and other evils. Merely engaging in a physical exercise of hunger and thirst without achieving this spiritual state, is not the end. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) categorically stated it: "Whoever leaves the food and drink, but does not give up falsehood, evil deeds and badmouthing to others, Allah is not in need of his/her fasts. [Bukhari] Ramzan requires a complete spiritual inclination towards the achievement of the ultimate purpose of fasting— Taqwa (spiritual consciousness and righteousness)— as articulated in the Quran: O you who have believed, fasting is decreed upon you as it was decreed upon those before you, so that you may become righteous ". (2:183). Taqwa is the core essence of fasting in Islam. Muslims are ordained in the month of Ramzan to get well-trained to lead the entire life with full cognizance of the divinity, righteousness and spiritual consciousness. Enjoining good and forbidding evil (amr bil m'aruf and nahy anil munkar) is the means to achieve this noble end. As the Qur'an states in the above verse, fasting was prescribed for the earlier prophets and their peoples with the same purpose, which is; attaining taqwa and warding off the evil. For instance, fasting is prescribed in Judaism as an 'inner-directed' and 'outer-directed' act of virtue. The Jews traditionally observed two types of fasts—collective and individual. The former were meant to seek the mercy of the Almighty for the whole community, while the latter were kept as atonement for the sins. There are regular fasts in the Jewish jurisprudence such as the Day of Sabbath, which has the greatest significance as enunciated in the Mosaic Law.

He said that Phenomenology goes into the issue of grounded realities, which are actually constructions rather than realities, because they can be ideationally constructed. From this point of view, he explained, phenomenology is not merely a deductive system, albeit its formal advantages. He also explained ‘deductive system’ terming it ‘subjective to prediction and explanation’. “Most formal methods and theories in social sciences are based on the logic of deduction and induction”, Prof. Singh said. He defined ‘induction’ as ‘an observed reality’, and explained the idea of ‘deduction’ using a set of propositions.

An objective study of Indian Sufi literature, surprisingly enough, reveals that many early Islami... more An objective study of Indian Sufi literature, surprisingly enough, reveals that many early Islamic figures of India who were spiritually-inclined and inspired by Sufism, are mistakenly taken today as the ideologues of Wahhabism in India. Regrettably, our collective negligence and intellectual stagnation have concealed the pioneering contributions of great Indian mystics in the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment, human welfare and common goodwill. Those loudly claiming to represent the Sawad-Azam (mainstream Muslims) should take cognizance of the worrying fact that a large part of the Indian Sufis’ literature has not yet been published and is in the shape of manuscripts for ages. And that is precisely why they are misrepresented and sometimes defamed by the present-day ignoramuses.

One such instance is Imam of Ahle Sunnah (Sunni Muslims), Shaikh Abdul Haque Muhaddith Dehlvi (958-1052A.H), one of the leading Islamic scholars of the 11th century. An epoch-making personage well-versed in the sciences of Islam and practices of Sufism, Shaikh Dehlvi rendered historical contributions to the revival and renewal of faith as well as spiritual guidance of the Indian Muslims. It would be no exaggeration to state that from the early 11th century till the late 13th century, almost all remarkable works and researches on the classical Islamic sciences in India were a result of rigorous intellectual efforts and endeavours made by Shaikh Abdul Haque Muhaddith Dehlvi.

Authored by a renowned academician and author of numerous books on Islam, Dr. Moin Qazi and beautifully titled, “Women in Islam: Exploring New Paradigms”, the book came crashing down the prevalent misconceptions about the status of women in Islam. It’s worth mentioning that, a few months ago, I came across a book on the same subject, titled “Denied by Allah” which created doubts in many minds accusing women rights of being lesser in Islam. However, I am certain; one will find no room for any such doubts after glancing through the the contents of the book by Moin Qazi.
