This, most probably, was because of my experience of living in Kolkata for the first fifteen years of my life, which has created links between Bengal and culture in Bengal and my biographical trajectory, which are significant to date.I would have liked to include some further thoughts in the note here, evoked by a recent re-reading of the article, in the light of observations and impressions gleaned from current discourses that resonate with and complement some of the themes touched upon earlier, but perhaps that can form part of another note] !7 th

Jain is a reflection on the possibilities of reworking the debates on the coordinates relevant for analysing society in India, with a focus on the contrast between the north and eastern parts of the country, and the south. Seen against the backdrop of colonialism and of the prevailing cultural parameters, the paper outlines a tentative argument concerning the hegemonic and counter hegemonic possibilities and limits, particularly in the arena of consciousness and collective action, The paper is a reference point for my comments on certain aspects of the discussion in this paper which I have uploaded on academia.edu

It sets out the terrain of discourse on some major features of politics and culture such as of Hindutva and other currents such as those of the Deras in Punjab and Haryana which call for analyses that draw upon resources in anthropology and sociology as well as philosophy and political economy to arrive at some understanding of the current conjuncture of events and processes including their transformations and implications for the social trajectories of the present and the future.

His poems were translated by friends of a project that was spreading awareness of the harsh conditions, struggles and aspirations of Chinese migrant workers, in companies with militarystyle discipline and surveillance, not just in the Foxconn factory. Many more suicides by workers followed a spate of widely publicized 18 attempted suicides in Foxconn in 2010 resulting in 14 deaths, and these had continued till 2014, when these poems were published.

It traces the links between his conception and that of the French tradition of historical epistemology which is critical of positivism. How Bourdieu extends their views, and those of Bachelard especially, beyond the realm of the natural sciences, to the social sciences and sociology in particular, is discussed. In the process he introduces new concepts and methods, such as that of participant objectivation. His perspective reveals a convergence between the natural sciences and the social sciences as human endeavours striving for universal truths. This is reinforced and widened to include the humanities as well as demonstrated by his analysis of the literary field. The paper concludes with the observation that Bourdieu's post-positivist science is a salutary alternative to the postmodern critique of science.
