The first can be perceived sensually, and the latter can be perceived visually. The two media have similarities and differences, but there are also points where the two meet and intersect. With this concern, I draw on one of the critical works of Romanticism, namely der goldne Topf (1814) by E.T.A Hoffmann and representation of one of its essential characters, the apple woman in the book illustrations from 1913 and 1918. Edmund Schaefer (1913) and Ludwig Enders (1918) illustrated the Apple woman that are analyzed for this research. Lessing, with his book, Laocoon: An Essay on the Limits of Painting and Poetry (1766) provides a sign-theoretical approach and explains the different representations of Laocoon in poetry and pictorial art. Lessing's approach can perfectly complement the investigation with a cross-media approach and will open up the new ways of seeing, reinterpreting and perceiving the figure of the apple woman.

What happens to the language when one migrates to a new country? The paper analyses the role of the language in the short stories collection, Mutterzunge (Mothertongue) by Emine Sevgi Özdamar, published in 1990. Özdamar, with her novel, tries to highlight the critical issue of language and homelessness. Mutterzunge presents an inseparable bond between the way people use language and the identity they construct, reconstruct or project.

But how are cultures transferred from one country to another? They are transferred through oral or written transmission, often known as translation. Translation, however, can be more than just transmission of words. It has the power to develop and reimagine the culture of a country. Brothers Grimm set an example of cultural transmission with their book Kinder und Hausmärchen (KHM). Today, KHM is a worldwide known book and is translated in numerous languages. This present paper will discuss how the translations of KHM work in other cultures and how KHM has shaped the world.
