The authors predict here that nonperiodic magnetization dynamics in the field of ultrafast demagnetization, where a femtosecond laser pulse forces the magnetization vector to shrink without rotating, acts as the second (in addition to light itself) nonequilibrium drive on conduction electrons, leading to charge current pumping. The electromagnetic radiation by such pumped current contains proper spectral features at THz frequencies, as often observed experimentally but not fully understood microscopically. Since the time-dependent quantum transport formalism unraveling this effect also accounts for the well-known spin current pumping by periodic magnetization precession, the present study unifies, from a common microscopic viewpoint, such “low energy” effect with demagnetization dynamics as “higher energy” effect in spintronics.

Environment-adaptive machine learning potentials

Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIP) have shown great promise in predicting material properties when tailored for specific applications in mind. However, they face limitations when expanded to capture a diverse set of local atomic environments. Here, the authors introduce a novel method to construct environment-adaptive machine-learned (EAML) interatomic potentials by adapting to the local atomic environment of each atom. The approach shows a significant improvement in the accuracy of the EAML potential compared to the current state-of-the-art, paving the way for a new class of MLIPs.

Nanowelding of quantum spin-12 chains at minimal dissipation

Nonequilibrium phenomena are commonly expected to be nonuniversal, i.e., they depend intricately on the system and processes. Here, the authors show that nevertheless some universal features do persist. They consider the energetic cost of finite-time nano-welding of quantum spin-½ chains. They find that some features depend only on (i) the process speed, (ii) the system’s symmetry, and (iii) the existence of an energy gap. Depending on the strength of SU(2) symmetry breaking, there are striking universalities in (a) the scaling of the cost with the duration time for slowly-varying processes and (b) the functional form of the cost-optimal protocol.

Apparent delay of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in quenched open systems

The authors demonstrate here that, for open systems quenched using finite-ramp protocols, dissipation results in a delay in detecting phase transitions if a threshold-based criterion for an order parameter is used. This leads to a regime for intermediate quench speeds, in which the transition time follows the predicted universal scaling of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, despite the system appearing to enter a new phase after the ramp has ended. Their results highlight the subtleties of experimentally observing phase transitions in open systems.

Benchmarking quantum master equations beyond ultraweak coupling

Open quantum systems are ubiquitous, however, their description beyond ultraweak system-bath coupling is challenging. The standard Redfield master equation can violate positivity. Recently, Nathan and Rudner proposed an alternative equation, not suffering from this problem. The authors compare here both equations to the exact solution of a simple model. The Redfield equation performs noticeably better for transient dynamics. For the steady state it is slightly better for high temperatures, but fails at low temperatures, where the Nathan-Rudner equation is still accurate.

Disentangling nucleation and propagation of magnetization reversal in exchange-biased thin films

Understanding how exchange bias (EB) –- an effect utilized in many spintronic devices – affects basic magnetization reversal processes like domain nucleation and propagation is important both fundamentally and practically. Here, the authors describe a way to disentangle the EB field for domain nucleation and propagation in thin films. They find that nucleation EB can be quite varied, in contrast to propagation EB, and the two can differ significantly. Among other consequences, this can lead to hysteresis loop asymmetry, a widely observed yet partially understood phenomenon.

Here, the authors use muon and neutron spectroscopies to establish the magnetic ground state of the candidate rare-earth Kitaev model compound Na2PrO3. They find that the magnetism is drastically modified from what is required to realize Kitaev physics, and that local atomic physics simultaneously contributes to a vanishing static moment and an intense two-magnon continuum. These findings demonstrate how two hallmarks of quantum fluctuations, a vanishing static magnetic moment and an intense continuum of magnetic excitations, can arise in the absence of magnetic frustration.

Giant microwave absorption in the vortex lattice in s-wave superconductors

The authors develop here a theory of microwave absorption in superconductors in the presence of a pinned vortex lattice. They show that, in addition to the conventional absorption mechanism associated with the vortex core motion, there is another mechanism of microwave absorption caused by the time dependence of the quasiparticle density of states outside the vortex cores. This mechanism exists even in the absence of vortex motion, and provides the dominant contribution to microwave absorption in a broad range of parameters.

Josephson junctions with topological weak links should support Majorana bound states, yet are challenging to fabricate without damaging the topological material. Here, the authors evaporate a noble metal onto a (BiSb)2Te3 topological insulator that chemically reacts, creating a self-formed superconductor while minimizing damage. The interface between the superconductor and untouched (BiSb)2Te3 has adequate interface transparency, and the two materials have similar work functions. Under microwave irradiation, they observe suppressed first and third Shapiro steps, which supports the presence of Majorana bound states.

The superconducting order parameter of Sr2RuO4 is still strongly debated. A key issue is whether it is single- or multi-component. In this study, the authors apply uniaxial pressure to Sr2RuO4 to search for two characteristics of multicomponent superconductivity. Neither of the two signatures were found, and the authors show how tightly these null results constrain attempts to construct a two-component Ginzburg-Landau theory for the order parameter of this famous unconventional superconductor.

Tunable topological magnetism in superlattices of nonmagnetic B20 systems

Calculations using density functional theory and magnetic force theorem show that the chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in these B20 multilayers is significantly enhanced compared to bulk B20 compounds. The DMI also has a more complex structure here and stabilizes compact antiskyrmions, intermediate skyrmions, and AFM skyrmions, as confirmed by atomistic spin dynamics simulations.

If quasiperiodicity acts analogously to random disorder, then Anderson’s theorem for disordered superconductors indicates that unconventional (e.g., p- or d-wave) superconductivity will be suppressed in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities. Here, the authors find that unconventional superconductivity in a quasicrystal is suppressed only above a critical strength of the quasiperiodic potential. This suggests a qualitative distinction between quasiperiodic and disordered systems, with implications for our understanding of superconductivity in twisted moiré materials.

Zero-field finite-momentum and field-induced superconductivity in altermagnets

A new unconventional form of magnetism, called altermagnetism, was recently discovered, where a spin-split electronic band structure results in an anisotropic magnetization in momentum space, with a zero net magnetization. The authors show that when such altermagnetism meets superconductivity, a “Yoda ear” phase diagram appears, which hosts both finite-momentum superconductivity, even if the net magnetization is zero, and a rare field-induced superconducting region, in which a magnetic field induces superconductivity from a normal phase at zero field.

Thermal transport across a Josephson junction in a dissipative environment

Heat flow in superconducting circuits is emerging as an important theme of research. In this field, the authors make two theoretical advances. First, they demonstrate that heat current across a quantum impurity is expressed compactly in terms of a dynamical susceptibility that fully incorporates many-body physics. Second, they apply their formalism to the Schmid quantum phase transition between superconducting and insulating ground states. They unveil new signatures of that transition in the temperature dependence of thermal conductance, thus motivating further experimental studies.

Here, the authors find that unconventional superconductivity in a quasicrystal is suppressed only above a critical strength of the quasiperiodic potential. This suggests a qualitative distinction between quasiperiodic and disordered systems, with implications for our understanding of superconductivity in twisted moiré materials.

However, they face limitations when expanded to capture a diverse set of local atomic environments. Here, the authors introduce a novel method to construct environment-adaptive machine-learned (EAML) interatomic potentials by adapting to the local atomic environment of each atom. The approach shows a significant improvement in the accuracy of the EAML potential compared to the current state-of-the-art, paving the way for a new class of MLIPs.

They find that some features depend only on (i) the process speed, (ii) the system’s symmetry, and (iii) the existence of an energy gap. Depending on the strength of SU(2) symmetry breaking, there are striking universalities in (a) the scaling of the cost with the duration time for slowly-varying processes and (b) the functional form of the cost-optimal protocol.

Understanding how exchange bias (EB) –- an effect utilized in many spintronic devices – affects basic magnetization reversal processes like domain nucleation and propagation is important both fundamentally and practically. Here, the authors describe a way to disentangle the EB field for domain nucleation and propagation in thin films. They find that nucleation EB can be quite varied, in contrast to propagation EB, and the two can differ significantly. Among other consequences, this can lead to hysteresis loop asymmetry, a widely observed yet partially understood phenomenon.

Here, the authors use muon and neutron spectroscopies to establish the magnetic ground state of the candidate rare-earth Kitaev model compound Na2PrO3. They find that the magnetism is drastically modified from what is required to realize Kitaev physics, and that local atomic physics simultaneously contributes to a vanishing static moment and an intense two-magnon continuum. These findings demonstrate how two hallmarks of quantum fluctuations, a vanishing static magnetic moment and an intense continuum of magnetic excitations, can arise in the absence of magnetic frustration.

The authors develop here a theory of microwave absorption in superconductors in the presence of a pinned vortex lattice. They show that, in addition to the conventional absorption mechanism associated with the vortex core motion, there is another mechanism of microwave absorption caused by the time dependence of the quasiparticle density of states outside the vortex cores. This mechanism exists even in the absence of vortex motion, and provides the dominant contribution to microwave absorption in a broad range of parameters.

Josephson junctions with topological weak links should support Majorana bound states, yet are challenging to fabricate without damaging the topological material. Here, the authors evaporate a noble metal onto a (BiSb)2Te3 topological insulator that chemically reacts, creating a self-formed superconductor while minimizing damage. The interface between the superconductor and untouched (BiSb)2Te3 has adequate interface transparency, and the two materials have similar work functions. Under microwave irradiation, they observe suppressed first and third Shapiro steps, which supports the presence of Majorana bound states.

The superconducting order parameter of Sr2RuO4 is still strongly debated. A key issue is whether it is single- or multi-component. In this study, the authors apply uniaxial pressure to Sr2RuO4 to search for two characteristics of multicomponent superconductivity. Neither of the two signatures were found, and the authors show how tightly these null results constrain attempts to construct a two-component Ginzburg-Landau theory for the order parameter of this famous unconventional superconductor.

The clear identification of Majorana modes remains one of the most challenging unresolved issues in condensed matter physics. The authors explore the thermoelectric properties transverse to quantum-dot-based Josephson junctions in a novel four-terminal configuration. The superconducting phase dependence introduces a distinctive control mechanism that significantly aids in detecting signatures of Majorana states. This is evidenced by their impact on transverse electrical and thermal conductances, the Seebeck coefficient, and the observed violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law.

The authors measure here a four-terminal Josephson junction within two coupled DC superconducting quantum interference devices. The device behaves as a tunable ϕ0 junction with a nontrivial current-phase relation. Its current-phase relation, and the current-phase relation of other multiterminal junctions including some purported to host Andreev molecule states, are shown to be well described by a network of two-terminal junctions coupling the junction terminals without any Andreev bound state interactions.
