Gerson D. Cohen ז”ל
Gerson D. Cohen ז”ל was a historian, rabbi, educator, and leader of Conservative Judaism in the United States. Born in New York in 1924, Cohen was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1948. Subsequently he received his doctorate from Columbia University and there became a lecturer in Semitic Languages and director of the Center for Israel and Jewish Studies. In 1970, Cohen joined the faculty of the Seminary as professor of history, and in 1972 he was appointed chancellor, serving until 1986. During his tenure Cohen oversaw the rebuilding of the Seminary library which had been severely damaged by fire in 1966.
He passed away in 1991.
