In Amitav Ghosh's Sea of Poppies this condition is delineated through a panorama of characters who migrate to an alien place in a ship called the Ibis. In a colonial backdrop, Ghosh draws attention to the historical consequences of imperialism leading to migration and displacement of people. By using the tools of deconstruction, this paper will focus on how the characters try to escape their names, caste, race, bodies, and places of origin while reconstructing identity. Cut off from the older personal, familial and national ties these migrants forge new identity and adopt the Ibis as new cultural community.

They occupy a key position in his novels. His stories are set against historical backdrops with interesting themes. He writes about the miserable plight of his protagonists' as they are helpless and silent observers of the historical events. The contemporary reality in all its open-endedness appears to be an important feature in the major works of Amitav Ghosh. Being a postcolonial writer, Ghosh manifests the tragedies of partition, painful experiences of dislocation and consequences of colonialism with a panoramic treatment of history from a post-modernistic insight. The present paper attempts to demonstrate the historical events and their consequences through Ghosh's vision to challenge the global conditions in his novel River of Smoke.

They occupy a key position in Aravind Adiga's novels. His novels deal with two contrasting eras, one that still clings to the old decaying moral values and another that is anxious to accept the fast-emerging new moral values. He writes about the miserable plight of his protagonists' as they are refused by the society, friends and family. Most of his characters have to feel detached as they turn reactionaries. Balram Halwai, Ashok, Masterji and Dharmen Shah are the examples of his characters experiencing disconnection with their families. Adiga focuses on moral values like honesty, loyalty, compassion, tolerance and forgiveness that cease to have any meaning in the postmodern society.
