PATIENTS’ AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL EXERCISES IN THE PREVENTION OF DIABETES MELLITUS TYPE II COMPLICATIONS, 2016

This is mainly associated with factors like urbanization changes in daily lifestyle; unhealthy diets, lack of physical activities (sedentary life), and increase in weight. Limited knowledge of the cause of the disease and preventive measures also contribute to the rise in the number of new cases. OBJECTIVES: To determine the awareness of patients with Diabetes Mellitus type II on the importance of exercise in the prevention of its complications. DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional study PLACE OF STUDY: Outpatient diabetic clinic at KCMC Hospital in Moshi Tanzania. METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted among 78 participants with DM type II at KCMC diabetic outpatient clinic. Participants were recruited by a convenient sampling method. Data was collected through the self-administering of a semi-structured modified questionnaire with open and close-ended questions during four weeks from April to June 2016. RESULTS: A sample size of 78 participants, females [41 (52.6%)] and males [37 (47.4%)] with the mean age (SD±) of 57 (± 10). Most of the study participants were somewhat aware of diabetes mellitus type II and its related complications [33 (42%)]. Over half of the participants were aware of the importance of exercise in the prevention of Dm complications [56 (72%)]. There were more overweight participants in this study population [37 (47%)]. Peripheral vascular disease was the leading complication of DM type II among participants [73 (93%)]. There was a significant relationship between weight and the occurrence of peripheral vascular disease (p = 0.01). Overweight participants were more affected by different complications related to the disease. A total of [51 (40%)] of the participants reported that they don’t do physical exercises but are involved in other daily physical activities. Walking was the most preferred physical activity, which is used as a mode of transport by [46 (59%)] of the participants. Lack of time was the main reason for not doing physical exercises. The leading source of information on the importance of physical exercises is from nurses for DM type II patients [27 (34%)]. CONCLUSION: There is high knowledge of the importance of physical exercises in prevention of the complications related to DM type II. An increase in body weight can be linked to different complications like peripheral vascular disease which may be worsened by a lack of physical activities and exercises among participants despite their knowledge of its importance. More research should be done to link the importance of physical activities to combat different complications of DM type II.
