Hi from Oklahoma! A few years ago I went on an extended solo road trip through SE CA, up through the deserts and zig zagged the Sierras. It was the best. I picked up my 1st copy of DOR & since, your podcast has become the soundtrack of my daily walks. Hey Ken, sense of place has always been really important to me and especially so this year. Just wondering what other places in the country make you feel that deep connection to the area that you get in the Mojave, if any. I’d really like to move out of the city at some point and seek out a place that makes me feel that. Thanks for all you do, your show has been very therapeutic for me. Take care.

Hello and thanks for the good question. Many places call to me: hometown of New Orleans, the Eastern Sierra, slickrock country in SE Utah, the Hudson Valley, the wooded / coastal Pacific Northwest. The intermountain West, Nova Scotia, Blue Ridge Mountains. Anyplace where we can be part of our eco-region, eat the food from the land and sea, know the folklore and history and plants and animals.

I should really do something about this place, mop the floors, burn some incense, etc. Meanwhile, I’m at DESERT ORACLE, both the radio show/podcast and the print journal (subscribe for $25 & get four issues as I publish them), and regrettably I am on Twitter, and Desert Oracle is on Instagram, and a lot of good weird projects are happening in 2020, including a desert book to be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, a vinyl reissue I’m “curating” for Joyful Noise Records, a noir story in (you guessed it!) the upcoming Palm Springs Noir from Akashic Books, and a big part of how this all happens is that Desert Oracle has many patrons who help us keep the office open—you can be among that happy crowd!
