Hi from Oklahoma! A few years ago I went on an extended solo road trip through SE CA, up through the deserts and zig zagged the Sierras. It was the best. I picked up my 1st copy of DOR & since, your podcast has become the soundtrack of my daily walks. Question: Next time you're in Joshua Tree Saloon, could you please find the artist of the cowboy "5 aces" poker game print by the door? I would be forever indebted to you! Patreon for life! Thanks if you're able. You're my only hope! Terri Sadler

This we shall attempt to do! The saloon is once again open for “inside dining” (day drinking) and we will soon return to our beloved JT bar. The only bar, in fact.

EPISODE #131: THE HEAT MONSTER

EPISODE #131: THE HEAT MONSTER

Well it finally happened, just like every year. All the sudden, it’s hot again. A week ago, it was pleasant out. Now, we cry in the frying pan. Or we will cry, in the weeks to come. October’s somewhere on the horizon. Unless it’s a mirage.
Plus: The Legend of Tahoe Tessie, which you can read about here in Alta Magazine. Time for EPISODE #131: “THE HEAT MONSTER.” With trippy new sounds from…

EPISODE #127: TRY NOT TO DIE

Photo by Lance Gerber for Palm Springs Life.
Because the second vaccine dose knocked your host to the ground … . He went ahead and made a new episode anyway. A good excuse to finally do something from our hardcover book:
As we come out of our holes and return to our beloved American Desert, it’s time to remember a dozen simple rules to keep your day hike from becoming a disaster. We don’t…

Hey Ken, sense of place has always been really important to me and especially so this year. Just wondering what other places in the country make you feel that deep connection to the area that you get in the Mojave, if any. I’d really like to move out of the city at some point and seek out a place that makes me feel that. Thanks for all you do, your show has been very therapeutic for me. Take care.

Hello and thanks for the good question. Many places call to me: hometown of New Orleans, the Eastern Sierra, slickrock country in SE Utah, the Hudson Valley, the wooded / coastal Pacific Northwest. The intermountain West, Nova Scotia, Blue Ridge Mountains. Anyplace where we can be part of our eco-region, eat the food from the land and sea, know the folklore and history and plants and animals.

EPISODE #125: ACCIDENTAL MIRACLE (AT OWENS VALLEY)

It’s our fifth season, our Five-Year Plan, tonight at 10 p.m. PST on Z 107.7 FM in Joshua Tree and across the Great Mojave Wilderness. EPISODE #125: OWENS VALLEY & THE ACCIDENTAL MIRACLE. What made the Owens Valley the way it is, in our time? An accident of history, of water grabs, of one group of humans using easy money to buy out another group of humans, that’s what preserved the most beautiful…

Hello! I should really do something about this place, mop the floors, burn some incense, etc. Meanwhile, I’m at DESERT ORACLE, both the radio show/podcast and the print journal (subscribe for $25 & get four issues as I publish them), and regrettably I am on Twitter, and Desert Oracle is on Instagram, and a lot of good weird projects are happening in 2020, including a desert book to be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, a vinyl reissue I’m “curating” for Joyful Noise Records, a noir story in (you guessed it!) the upcoming Palm Springs Noir from Akashic Books, and a big part of how this all happens is that Desert Oracle has many patrons who help us keep the office open—you can be among that happy crowd!
