Awareness of limitations of conventional simulators that have been used for pre-clinical training for this purpose, has paved way for digital dentistry as the new pedagogical paradigm that offers multiple advantages over conventional dental teaching methods (Zafar et al ., 2020). Digital innovations including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are becoming more prevalent in dentistry (Dutã et al ., 2011 in Zafar et al ., 2020). This paper reviews some of the recent methods such as computer assisted simulators, virtual patients, virtual teeth, use of MultiUser Virtual environment, etc., and highlights the benefits of using these for the preclinical training in dental education. The need for the new age facilitators to adopt to and employ the newer technology based method...

It is characterized by triad of signs comprising sparse hair, abnormal or missing teeth and inability to sweat. The case of a six year old child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and complete anodontia of both primary and permanent dentition is presented. Owing to the need for treatment at an early age for the anodontia, the prosthodontic management of such a young child can be difficult. Complete dentures were provided to encourage normal psychological development and to improve the function of the stomatognathic system.

This article describes the process of developing CBC in the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry under the initiative of Dental Council of India. Rationale behind CBC development is to bring uniform system of education for improving oral health outcomes of the society in long term. The process of CBC development was a collaborative teamwork, planned meticulously with predefined outline, tasks and timelines. Workflow involved identification of curricular content, defining program goals, outlining competencies, assigning them domains / levels of clinical competence, priority, educational strategies, assessment practices, integration and numbers needed for certification in selected competencies. Early clinical exposure was introduced in CBC. The final content was validated and submitted to the Council. CBC output can be summarized as competencies with fair share of all domains, levels, prioritization and integration. It is characterized by flexibility for choosing educational strategies and assessment practices. It opens up ways for global competition. However, it still has some inherent weaknesses like diverging learning paths, time constraints and number chasing. CBC can further have more academic flexibility and develop toward an outcome-based approach. Faculty preparedness and acceptability shall be the biggest challenges in CBC implementation besides resources' availability, support from leadership and acceptability from our primary stakeholders, our learners. CBC is the beginning of evidence-based delivery of education in dentistry. An effective implementation of CBC in current form would result in increased numbers of competent oral healthcare professionals for the society.

Moderate-to-high success rates are reported with ZOE in preserving chronically infected primary teeth. However, it fails to meet many of the criteria for an ideal obturating material. Databases searched were PubMed, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar. Articles published between January 1, 1993, and June 30, 2016, with in vivo studies for obturating materials in primary teeth pulpectomy with placement of preformed crown, reporting follow-up period of at least 12 months with clinical and radiographic success rates were selected for this review. In total, 122 articles were retrieved. After the removal of duplicates and screening, full-text articles were analyzed; of which eight articles were selected for the systematic review. No significant difference was seen in the outcome of obturating materials used in comparison with ZOE in the included studies. Outcomes of ZOE paste obtained with clinical and radiographic evaluation were similar when compared to the newer combinations of materials available for obturating primary teeth today. More number of randomized controlled clinical trials for primary teeth pulpectomies with at least 12 months follow-up period and placement of crown as final restoration need to be carried out for testing the newer materials in comparison with ZOE to conclude a suitable alternative obturating material.

The objectives were to assess the degree of microleakage with self-adhering composite Dyad flow and that with Fissurit F as pit and fissure sealants and, to compare the same between these two materials. Materials and Methods: 20 premolars extracted for orthodontic purpose with intact occlusal surfaces were selected for the study. These were divided randomly into two groups, group A and group B, of 10 teeth each where Fissurit F and Dyad flow were used respectively as pit and fissure sealants. After enameloplasty was carried out, respective sealants were applied to the teeth of both the groups according to the manufacturers’ instructions. The teeth were then thermocycled and subjected to 1% methylene blue dye penetration for 24 hours, and sectioned mesio-distally. Microleakage was evaluated by observing degree of dye penetration under a stere...

Thus, educating parents by providing anticipatory guidance could help in improving the oral health of infants. Aim: To test the effectiveness of a lecture-based educational module in the improvement and retention of parental knowledge regarding infant oral health care. Setting and Design: This interventional study, with the inclusion of 110 parents of infants, was carried out in the Departments of Pediatric Dentistry, Pediatrics, and Gynaecology. Subjects and Methods: An educational module in the form of a brief lecture using a power-point presentation was prepared. This included the key features of anticipatory guidance such as the importance of healthy pregnancy, diet and nutrition, oral hygiene maintenance, feeding practices, development of teeth, causes and sequelae of early childhood caries, importance of early and regular dental visits, a...

The name ranula has been derived from the Latin word rana which means frog. The swelling resembles a frog's translucent underbelly or air sacs. Ranula usually appears as a painless, fluctuant swelling. It usually occurs unilaterally and in young adults. This paper reviews and highlights a case report of ranula in the floor of the mouth that has been successfully treated by marsupialization. A 14-year-old female suffered from unilateral swelling in the floor of the mouth that had been enlarging slowly over the past 4 months. Conventional marsupialization was done. No complication was observed during the postoperative period, and there was no recurrence in the 24 months follow-up period.

Thus, this in vitro study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of a new chemomechanical caries removal agent, Papacarie (Formula and Acao), with conventional slow-speed rotary instrument (bur). Papacarie is a new formulation and has the main active ingredient papain, an endoprotein with bactericidal, bacteriostatic and anti-inflammatory actions. Twenty extracted human molar teeth with deep dentine caries and no enamel coverage were selected for the study. After the preparation of the teeth and removal of the caries with the respective methods, they were decalcified, dehydrated and embedded in paraffin blocks for histologic studies. Serial sections of 5 mum thickness were examined for the presence of bacteria under light microscope. Though complete removal of caries was achieved significantly in both the methods, there was less marked destruction of dentinal tubules in chemomechanical caries removal method by Papacarie. Thus, Papacarie is recommended as an efficient, easy to perform, comfortable and less destructive solution for the patient seeking an alternative to the conventional method.

There is delayed exfoliation of primary dentition and eruption of permanent teeth. Presence of multiple supernumerary teeth and morphologic abnormalities of the maxilla and mandible are also observed. The incidence of this autosomal dominant disorder is reported as 1:10,00,000 and the prevalence is 0.5:1,00,000, with no gender or ethnic group predilection. It was first described by Marie and Sainton in 1898. This paper presents the case of a seven year old male patient who reported to the department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry with a chief complaint of decayed teeth. Following thorough clinical and radiographic examination and investigations along with 3D images, the diagnosis was confirmed as cleidocranial dysostosis. A familial pattern was observed as patient’s father and older sister had...
Various acquired and inherited disorders of the teeth alter the size, shape and number of teeth. ... more Various acquired and inherited disorders of the teeth alter the size, shape and number of teeth. Individually, they are rare but collectively they form a vast body of knowledge with which all dentists should be familiar. One of the developmental defects affecting teeth is fusion, and is generally observed in the deciduous dentition. It affects not only the size of the teeth, but may also lead to malocclusion, concerns with aesthetics, periodontal problems, and, also increase the susceptibility to caries. Treatment of such teeth may require multidisciplinary care. A few case reports have been documented, reporting fusion of teeth in the permanent dentition. This case report brings to light an unusual and rare finding of fusion in the maxillary posterior region.
