The Smart Grid will depend on a large number of renewable energy resources which require sophisticated control and coordination mechanisms for efficient and reliable demand side management (DSM). In this paper, we propose a multi-agent based system to control and coordinate the operation among different entities within the Smart Grid. Specifically, the agents autonomously coordinate their activities to satisfy the local constraints of different entities while at the same time satisfying the underlying global goal of energy management. The novelty of our system is in formulating the coordination problem among the agents as a multi-objective optimization problem solved by a quantum-inspired evolution algorithm. We have extensively evaluated the system using the JIAC-V multi-agent platform. Experimental results show that our system is feasible and effective. Our met...

It discusses the discrepancy between the stated aims of agent research with regard to agent applications, and the reality as found in many (general) agent conferences as well as journals. We demonstrate this discrepancy by analysing how implementations of software systems that employed agent technology are represented in publications, both in form of conference as well as journal papers. We analyse some agent related conferences and journals, and look at the distribution of application papers at past conferences/journal issues. In order to lay foundations for a discussion of the reasons for this inconsistency as well as conclusions that can be drawn from it, we analyse relevant stakeholders for agent application papers. The aim of this chapter is to provide a basis for discussing the state and status of agent applicatio...

It is envisioned that the future power network will depend on a large number of renewable energy resources connected directly to the low and medium voltage power network (s). Demand Side Management (DSM) is clearly to be an important element to meet this goal. Demand side management is concerned with actions that reshape the energy consumption pattern for the end-users during peak energy consumption times. To control and ...

It provides syntactical as well as semantical matching techniques. Besides classifying input and output parameters it offers an approach to precondition and effect rule matching and reasoning. In this chapter we describe the architecture and the workflow of our approach and the results that have been evaluated during the last S3 Contest and with ...

Previously independent functions can now be combined, or easily exchange data and information, hence offering new opportunities. In order to leverage and exploit these new possibilities, these services must be built to access each other's data and functionalities in an open, secure and simple manner. This paper describes a smart learning platform that provides the backbone to the University of the Future for the next generation campus environment.

Making sense of this huge amount of data is challenging. Two emerging technologies developed to solve this issue namely, Linked Data, and Visual Analytics. Linked Data provides structured data over the web. Structured data are understandable by machines therefore smart queries, automated visualization, and linked between different datasets over the web might be possible. On the other hand, Visual Analytics amplify analyst cognitive ability by providing data analysis process enhanced with interactive visualization. In our project, we are aiming to integrate these two technologies to provide a powerful Visual Analytics System.
