Dr. Kohei Oda obtained his M.S. degree from the University of Osaka Prefecture (UOP) in 1969, and his Ph.D. in the field of Agricultural Chemistry in 1975. He worked at UOP first as an Assistant (1969-1978), then Assistant Professor (1978-1985), and finally an Associate Professor (1986-1991). In 1992 he moved to the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) where he held a position of Professor until his retirement. His principal scientific fields of interest are Applied Microbiology and Applied Biochemistry. In 2007, KIT awarded him the status of Professor Emeritus. Since that time, he worked as a Visiting Professor at the Universidad Federal de Sao Paulo, Brazil (2007, for 6 month), and at Khon Kaen University, Thailand (2009, for one year). In 1997, he received an Award from Nikkei Business Publications, Inc. (Medical field). Since 2016, he has become is now Fellow of the Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry. His main contributions to this research field are discoveries of serine carboxyl peptidase family (sedolisins) [S53-family of serine peptidase], and the 6th family of peptidases, glutamic peptides G1 family (eqolisins). His ongoing interests are not only sedolisins and eqolisins, but also microbial hydrolytic enzymes, particularly those involved in degradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
