Bereczky was a genuine and authentic leader of those who fought for the inner spiritual renewal of the church between the two world wars, a church organizer, a well-known and respected preacher, who saved many by risking his life during the deportation of Hungarian Jews to extermination camps, for which he was posthumously awarded the honorary title “Righteous Among the Nations” from the Yad Vashem. However, the communist state apparatus established after World War II found in him the person who, by placing him at the head of the Reformed Church, could bring about a radical reduction of the public and social role of the Church almost without any resistance. So, the question arises: how and why could Bereczky, whose Christian commitment was hard to question, become the servant of the dictatorial state apparatus with its atheistic ideology? Our study attempts to record the possible intrinsic and extrinsic motivations that might explain this dilemma, while also providing a general insight into Albert Bereczky’s life.

His friendship with Zoltán Tildy, President of the Smallholders Party, led Bereczky into the resistance movement, and he helped him to organize one of the main bodies of the movement, the Hungarian Front. Miklós Mester, State Secretary at the Ministry of Religion and Public Education, and Ottó Komoly, President of the Hungarian Zionist Federation, also became important associates. It is mainly in the light of the memoirs and diaries of the latter two that our study gives an insight into Bereczky’s multifaceted and varied activities, the main elements of which were liaising between different resistance groups and hiding those who had been persecuted on racial or political grounds. Bereczky also played a major role in the Reformed Church in Hungary’s outreach to Jews, for example, in organizing the ultimately unsuccessful public church protest against the deportations.

The examples reveal that there is an immense diversity among the cases as far as the causes, the course, and the outcome of the ordeal are concerned. However, a possible pattern for classification emerges: 1. The state started secular legal action against a pastor. The church automatically suspended the pastor from all church activities. After the secular procedure (whether there was secular punishment for the pastor or not), the church governance tried to distance itself from the incriminated pastor, mostly by forced retirement. 2. There was no state legal action against the pastor; however, the church governance initiated a disadvantageous change in the pastor's employment status and sidelined him: a. In some cases, sidelining happened as a result of a show trial; b. In most cases, there was no actual state or church legal action against the pastor. The church governance intimidated the pastor by threatening him with a possible state or church legal action. Consequently, the pastor submitted himself to the disadvantageous change "voluntarily."

This paper aims to give an introduction into the origins of Jenő Sebestyén's theological movement, the "Historical Calvinism", while it discusses Sebestyén's formative role in the creation and later development of the Soli Deo Gloria Student Alliance (SDG). Historical Calvinism can be understood as the Hungarian adaptation of Abraham Kuyper's (1837-1920) Neo-Calvinism. Following Dutch examples, Sebestyén inspired his students, especially Zoltán Töltéssy (1900-1932), at the Budapest Reformed Seminary to form a confessional-minded student movement in order to serve the evangelization of the Youth and the spiritual renewal of the Reformed Church in Hungary in the 1920s. Soon, the SDG would become widely popular among high school and university students, attain the support of the church officials, and pursue many debates with the inter-confessional student missionary organizations.

From 1536 Pays de Vaud belonged to the Bernese protestant administration but consisted primarily of French refugee pastors allegiant to Calvin and his ideas. They Calvinists of Pays de Vaud questioned the civil magistrate's right to interfere into church affairs especially into the practice of church discipline, such as exclusion from the Lord's Supper and excom-munication from the congregation. According to the Zwinglian establishment of Berne the right for exclusion and excommunication belonged to the civil magistrates. In the Calvinists' view the appropriate administrator of the exclusion and excommunication was the Genevian-type consistory, consisting of both clerical and civilian elected members. Noteworthy significance can be attributed to the events in the Pays de Vaud. On the one hand, banished from Bernese territory most of the Calvinist pastors of Vaud were sent to reinforce the French underground evangelical movement. The Calvinists' failure in the Pays de Vaud turned Calvin's attention to France by which the Calvinism became a world phenomenon. On the other hand, from this struggle emerged a theological justification for the state's supremacy over church affairs, namely by Wolfgang Musculus' De Magistratibus. Interestingly, this justification played a more important role in later times than in the actual controversy: Thomas Erastus, the builder of the territorial state– church of the Palatinate, John Withgift, the archbishop of Canterbury and the protector of Tudor-Absolutism against the Puritans, and the Dutch Remonstrants all were influenced by the teaching of Musculus. The goal of this paper is to present how the two controversial sides regulated its church affairs and, in addition, to show the highpoint of the debate between Calvin's Vaudois adherers and the Bernese Magistrate for the government of the church, especially for the right of excommunication.

Firstly, the earliest period of Berne's reformation is discussed, including the priority of Luther's influence on the city. Then those channels are discussed by which Zwingli practised a leading role in the city's evangelical movement; namely his writings relating to Berne and his extended correspondence. By Zwingli's correspondence, those persons are introduced who nourished close relationship with the Zurich reformer, especially Berchtold Haller. Finally, Zwingli's role at the Disputation of Berne and in the consolidation of the Bernese Reformation is examined.

The 700 members strong, almost 400 hundred years old parish's chief elder was also relieved of his duties whilst the consistory was dissolved. The downgrading of the long-standing parish, the dissolution of the elected consistory, and the deprivation of its right to elect its minister gave rise to protests both inside and outside the parish. An array of scandals, disciplinary issues, and difficult as well as intricate lawsuits followed. The matter also generated waves in the entire Reformed Church since the presidium of the diocese overlooked the ecclesiastic rules and regulations, ordering the downgrade without the consent of the diocesan assembly-also assisted by the presidium of the church district-, accepting the new situation and appointing the mission minister. The case of Szigetszentmiklós is a great example to understand the global picture of the actions taken against the disloyal ministers and consistories by the ecclesiastic governance intertwined with the one-party state.

A tanulmánykötet tíz szerzője e "leckét jól megtanulva" veti papírra objek-tíven a reformáció hagyatékával kapcsolatosan megfogalmazott téziseit. 1 Egyetemi előadótanár, dékán. Előadásomban rövid történeti bevezetés után az újonnan alapított gyülekezetek és a bennük végzett szolgálat sajátságairól adok általános képet, végül pedig a Las Vegasi gyülekezet alapításának részletes bemutatásán, mintegy esettanulmányon keresztül nyújtok mélyebb betekintést a gyülekezetalapítás részleteibe.

A méltatlan hátratételt idő előtti nyugdíjazás, fizetéscsökkentés, kikényszerített álláscsere, de akár a lelkészi tisztségtől és nyugdíjtól való végleges megfosztás is jelenthette. Voltak olyanok, akiket minden eljárás nélkül, megfélemlítéssel vettek rá a szolgálatuk elhagyására, másokkal szemben koncepciós fegyelmi eljárásokat folytattak le.

A kálvinizmus nyitánya.

Lehet-e a reformáció emlékévében a protestantizmus családján belül lezajlott vitáról szólni? A vita nemcsak teológiai eszközökkel folyt.

The first half of our study briefly describes the life and studies of Gábor Incze, the main stages of his pastoral career and its character, then describes in detail the processes leading up to his retirement, and finally gives an insight into the events of his rehabilitation, which had a dubious outcome.
Soon, the SDG would become widely popular among high school and university students, attain the support of the church officials, and pursue many debates with the inter-confessional student missionary organizations.
deviant adolescence behavior. By showing examples of his personal accounts the paper discusses whether Bereczky went through a ‘sudden’ or a ‘gradual’ conversion experience.
