The design of the residence stressed the special historical role and political mission of the Eggenberg family, but implicitly presented a philosophical program via cosmological image of the Universe expressed through architecture. It presented the flow of time and celestial mechanics, earthly hierarchy, political utopia and social harmony, as well as the sphere of beliefs and values, conveyed through astrological symbols. Our research has shown that Johannes Kepler’s manuscript collection of horoscopes contains the horoscope of Hans von Eggenberg, whose date of birth was previously unknown. The finding of a natal chart in Kepler’s handwritten legacy filled this gap in Eggenberg’s biography. Although no other direct evidence confirming the personal acquaintance of Kepler and Eggenberg has yet been found, nevertheless, the coincidence in their biographies suggests that Kepler could be the inspirer of the idea of this “calendar building”, as well as a preacher of the Copernican model of the Universe, reflected in the painting of the Planetary Hall of the palace.

Kepler included debate on the nature and validity of astrology in several of his treatises, starting with De Fundamentis Astrologiae Certioribus (On the More Certain Fundamentals of Astrology) in 1601, running through Tertius Interveniens (Third Man in the Middle) in 1610, and including the major work, Harmonice Mundi, in 1619. 1 In On the More Certain Fundamentals of Astrology, Kepler claimed that his reformed version of astrology was proved by research and based on empirical observation and experience. The basis of his claims was his own collection of 800 horoscopes, which forms a part of his twenty-two volume handwritten legacy. A study of these horoscopes suggests the presence of a specific order in the organization of the material. The collection includes sixteen charts that belong to one family and which supports the proposition he outlined in De Stella Nova. 2 In Harmonice Mundi, he discussed the similarities he found in horoscopes of members of the same family, writing that,

Alexander Chizhevsky was a Soviet-era polymath and interdisciplinary scientist, who was prominent for his use of historical research techniques (historiometry) to link the 11-year solar cycle, Earth’s climate and the mass activity of the peoples. Two major tendencies in thought had an impact on Chizhevsky's formation as a scientist and thinker with respect to the theory of connecting the Sun's activity to mass uprisings. There is a philosophy of Russian cosmism and the natural philosophy and astrology of Johannes Kepler (1571–1630). Though Chizhevsky's belonging to the first line of Russian cosmists is a priori approved, then the connection of his philosophy and research methodology to Kepler’s ideas was not in the focus of previous studies. The paper fills a gap in the inquiry into Chizhevsky’s sources and approaches to the study of social processes and their uses for the development of society. The survey examines Chizhevsky’s theory and methodological procedure for the study of historical periodicity and solar activity and its connection to Johannes Kepler (1571 – 1630) theory of universal harmony and political astrology presented in his works Harmonices Mundi and On the More Certain Fundamentals of Astrology. Key words: Alexander Chizhevsky, Johannes Kepler, Russian cosmism, solar activity cycles, political astrology, conscious historical process.

The 800 charts presented are part of the collection of manuscripts kept in the St. Petersburg branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Publication of this material aims to make it available for the scholarly study. This issue is the joint project of the Institute for the Study of Cosmology and Astronomy in History,Philosophy and Culture (Moscow, Russia) and the Sophia Centre of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (United Kingdom) and is Phase 2 of the Kepler’s Astrology project. All the articles are in two languages: Russian and English that, undoubtedly, will expand the reading audience.

The publication also focused on supporting the validity of astrology, and for this purpose, he suggested a special method for prognostication, based on Kepler's understanding of the power of aspects that are geometrical ratios between planets. Krafft claimed that he expected support from the glorious Kepler. This study examines Krafft's method of meteorological prognostication and his statements concerning astrological models of planetary aspects connected with musical harmony and geometrical ratios and compares them to Kepler's principles presented in his works: Harmonices Mundi and Concerning the More Certain Fundamentals of Astrology, as well as Krafft's reception, examination and application of Kepler's principals in his own research. The methodology of this survey is based on a comparative approach to studying historical and literature documents that are archival sources and philosophical literary work in order to investigate general concepts, analyse their interrelations, find similarities and differences as well as to establish dialogic relations with other texts and contexts. The study demonstrates a strong connection of Krafft's article to Kepler's treatises as well as his methodology of astrological meteorology based on Kepler's theory and method. Finally, the study argues that Krafft builds his experimental study on Kepler's methods, not only repeating, but also testing and validating them.
