Thus, Mark becomes the first witness to the use of the word σπεκουλάτωρ in Greek. The Latin word speculator was used in the first century mainly in respect of the praetorian speculatores soldiers who acted as the emperor's personal guard in Rome and who were involved in the events of the civil war in the years 68-70 CE. Mark's use of the word σπεκουλάτωρ (along with other factors) points to the city of Rome as the gospel's origin, since the vast majority of attestations of the word speculator occur in the city of Rome, where these soldiers mainly carried out their duties.

There are Latin loanwords, nonce borrowings, semantic calques and two switches of code from Greek into Latin, which are very significant when analysing the origin of the Gospel. Some of these Latin words and expressions reinforced the role of the Roman Empire in the narrative. The aim of this article is to present a first stage in the Wirkungsgeschichte (reception history) of these Latinisms by studying how these Latin words were received. This study is necessary in order to understand whether they continued to develop the sociolinguistic, literary and rhetorical functions that they fulfilled in the Greek text. In order to analyse how these words have been received in the tradition, four significant stages will be presented: first, Matthew and Luke’s reception of these Latinisms; second, the Greek textual tradition; third, the Latin and Syriac versions; fourth, the Church Fathers and medieval commentaries, as well as the works of Valla and Erasmus.

This article considers how the Old Syriac versions and the Peshitta have treated these borrowed terms given that the translators were native Aramaic speakers and how the functions developed by these borrowed terms have been altered due to the translation process.

The relationship of the vocabulary of other works close to Mark’s Gospel is also contrasted with the LXX. These works have been chosen because of their Jewish register (Paul, Josephus, Philo, Joseph and Aseneth), closeness in terms of literary genre (Life of Apollonius, Evagoras, Agesilaus) or linguistic variety (Polibyus, Epictetus) with Mark. Mark’s vocabulary is also placed in his contemporary context to understand his semantic options. This analysis concludes that 90% of Mark’s vocabulary is Septuagintal. The 128 Markan words not found in the LXX could be reduced to as few as 43 words whose roots do not appear in the LXX.

To this end, after defining the category 'style', specific passages of these texts will be studied in order to compare them. This comparison will show that Evagoras, Agesilaus and the Life of Euripides are written in a high style, far removed from Mark's low style. Therefore, the style of these three works cannot be considered as a factor that aligns them with the genre of the Gospel of Mark, as some authors propose.

The literary genre of the Gospel According to Mark remains an unresolved problem, and although various ideas have been put forward, as of present, a consensus has not been reached. This article presents the importance of bearing in mind current linguistic studies concerning literary genre, given the standstill encountered in relation to the investigation of relevant literary studies. These linguistic perspectives are applied to Mark’s Gospel in order to outline fundamental intentional aspects of the same: the purpose, the discursive community, worldview, etc., as privileged elements in order to understand the genre of the gospel. Mark finds its clearest reference in the Books of the LXX regarding its dialect, register, vocabulary, purpose and worldview.

Later, these tools will be applied to the Gospel of Mark to analyze significant aspects of its idiolect, especially those related to his use of multilingualism. From this analysis some conclusions are drawn that illuminate its idiolect from another angle, as well as the social actions that could be carried out by its author through the linguistic strategies that can be recognized from the study of its idiolect.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to propose on the basis of rhetorical and narrative analyses that the open ending of Paul’s short story about the Antiochean conflict (Gal 2:11-14) is a deliberate strategy that generates tension and expectation in his Galatian audience, in order to present the central statement of this letter: «a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ», a thesis which gives support to his central message to the Galatian community: «if you let yourselves be circumcised, Chhrist will be of no value to you at all»
