The term itself is somewhat misleading since it does not refer to a theory per se but rather to a method that facilitates the development of new theoretical insights—grounded theories. In this chapter the method is outlined, together with some background to its appearance and subsequent developments. Some key aspects are demonstrated using brief examples and exercises. Later sections describe the main features, procedures, outputs, and evaluation criteria.

Formal, mathematically-based notations, had been used with some effect at the level of code in the form of program-proving, usually in the form of constructing statements of pre- and post-conditions and invariants, followed by proofs that sections of code were totally constrained by these aspects. Program proving was applied successfully to several notable high-profile and safety-critical projects, mostly in the defence and space areas. It was also used in hardware design. The paper considers four aspects in the adoption of formal specification. (7 pages)

This introduction offers an overview of this early work, together with a summary of the presentations and discussions at the workshop itself. Methods Integration The idea of a method for software development only emerged once people’s conceptions of the activity grew from programming pure-and-simple to a wider view encompassing a range of activities other than the coding itself. From this, the idea of a procedure and range of practices for software development began to evolve. This is not to say that such practices were not undertaken by software developers prior to that; but it is to note that at some point people saw the necessity to start unravelling, explaining and formulating the craft of the software developer. By the mid-1960s programming started to d...

This disparagement originates in part from some key paradoxes in the method itself. Yet this is insignificant in contrast to the continuing antagonism emanating from outside the method, indicating critical limitations in the practices of the gatekeepers of the academic world. GTM seems to be the target of continual permutations of misunderstanding, and it is these that I wish to address, and I hope, dispel in what follows.
