This work challenges and attempts to build upon methodologies employed in prior studies. The existing approaches have been beholden to a framework whereby the usage of writing, and the reasons for its appearance, have been characterised as ‘administrative/bureaucratic/utilitarian’ and, or as an alternative, ‘ritual/ceremonial’ in nature. This is labelled the administrative-ritual dichotomy, and it will be the subject of extensive discussion. By suggesting novel routes of investigation, I intend on advancing the debate in this area.
