Joel Rookwood
I have experience and interest in lecturing, conducting research and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students in the following areas:
Christianity and Peace Promotion: Through the experience of working on related projects in Liberia, Azerbaijan, Russia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, I am interested in the Christian response to conflict and the socio-political mechanisms associated with preventative diplomacy as well as peace making, keeping and building.
International Development: I have a particular interest in aid distribution, sustainable development and social involvement.
Social Development and Integration: I have conducted research and welcome investigative projects relating to the promotion of co-existence and the structure of NGOs, especially in the fractured communities of Israel and Palestine.
Sport, Race and Identity: I have supervised masters and undergraduate research on areas such as sport and Olympism, regional, national and continental identities, Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture experience, racism, gangs, and antisocial behaviour.
British Fan Culture: As a member of the ‘92 Club’ (a group of supporters/writers who have watched a match in every professional English football ground), I have extensive knowledge of UK football supporter culture. I would welcome related projects on protests, social movements, heroism, non-league football, safe standing, foreign ownership, the 39th Game proposal, local history, fan marginalisation and globalisation.
European Fandom: Having experienced 100 games of continental football across 30 European countries, I have a particular interest in migration, nationalism, the Ultra movement, and the history and governance of European football.
Spectator Violence: My PhD examined the causality, impact, analysis and police and legal response to English and Welsh football violence, as well as the treatment and representation of British supporters in European competition. I am interested in supervising projects relating to football legislation, intelligence, disorder, and rivalry.
Sports Media: My primary interests in this context stem from my experience as a columnist on an international football website, covering tournaments such as the 2002, 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, the 2004 and 2008 UEFA European Championships, the 2005 FIFA World Club Championships, the 2008 CAF Cup of African Nations, the 2011 AFC Asian Cup; as well as in numerous domestic leagues in countries such as Australia, USA, Brazil and Argentina.
Performance Analysis and Community Sport: Having worked at professional sports clubs and national governing bodies, my interests in this respect lie in the fields of coaching, performance analysis, technique assessment and talent identification. I am also keen to supervise projects focusing on disabled sport provision, football academies and UK community football initiatives.
Learning and Teaching: I welcome projects examining the dissertation process, research supervision, mentoring and coaching, curriculum development, approaches to learning and teaching in higher education and research methodologies.
