Abstract
Using semantic-based Web service composition based on functional and non-functional user requests promises to enable automatic dynamic assembly of applications. Apart from many advantages of such approaches, an effective automatic dynamic semantic-based Web service composition approach is still an open problem. Publishing, discovery, and selection mechanisms as well as heterogeneity and limitations of semantic languages have a major impact on the effectiveness of service composition approaches. This paper explores the major challenges related to semantic languages, Web service publishing, discovery, and selection techniques which affect the composition of the service. Additionally, it evaluates the effectiveness of automation, dynamicity, scalability, adaptation, and management strategies of the composition approaches.
