Investigating Teachers’ Use of Educational Tools as a Collaborative Space for Networked Learning

Abstract

The chapter focuses on the possibilities and barriers to developing a collaborative design space (CourseBuilder) that enables (re)design of digital educational materials which looks at teachers’ interest in (1) designing their own teaching materials, (2) working professionally with the redesign and remixing of materials from different sources and (3) adapting them to the contexts in which materials of this type are included. The chapter should be seen as a move towards a deeper understanding of opportunities and challenges within teachers’ cooperation on designing, sharing, redesigning and resharing teaching materials. It shows that there is a high acceptance of digital teaching materials among teachers at upper secondary schools in Denmark. Furthermore, there seems to be a culture that supports collaborative (re)design. The teachers at the 49 institutions taking part in the study show a supportive environment regarding the use of the educational tools presented. But we find that, despite collaborative supportive environments at the specific institutions—and despite the design intentions, the layout and the free access—‘CourseBuilder’ does not facilitate these productive remix practices.
