Occurrence and clinical manifestations of trichothecene toxicoses and zearalenone toxicoses

  • Chapter
Diagnosis of Mycotoxicoses

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science ((CTVM,volume 33))

Abstract

Fusarium spp. are common fungi throughout the world. They occur as pathogens of plants and contaminants in feeds and grains. Many different chemical toxins have been recognized and isolated from a variety of Fusarium molds. There has been world wide concern for certain of these toxic metabolites, particularly since World War II and the recognition that alimental toxic aleukia in man as well as related diseases in animals may be related to certain Fusarium mycotoxins. The class of mycotoxins generally known as trichothecenes comprise more than thirty derivatives characterized by the presence of a tetracyclic 12,13-epoxytrichothec-9-ene nucleus. Major concern within this group has centered around three particular toxins known as T-2 toxin, diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS) and deoxynivalenol (DON). Excellent reviews of the sources, formation, chemistry, and detection of these toxins are available [33, 34, 41].
