Each archive exhibition documents an exhibition held previously at its respective gallery. This research project will also investigate the nature of these types of archival exhibitions, and why these two particular shows were significant enough that the ICA and Whitechapel Gallery felt it necessary to present their documentation as exhibitions in their own right.

Science fiction writers have investigated this idea for many years, setting stories in post-apocalyptic worlds that are the outcome of either natural or man-made disasters. Weisman, however, takes an ecological approach based on scientific studies of once inhabited geographic areas. In these situations, what artefacts would survive the test of time? What traces and echoes would be left that we were once here?

The research project will then focus on how it is possible to exist outside of these influences and make inherently free decisions.

Through looking at performance artwork examples and their relationship with their documentation, I mean to investigate what constitutes a live performance act. I will then examine whether the resulting documentation that is produced can ever truly represent the live act, or if you have to be there to interpret it. If a piece of artwork can be documented it also means it can be re-created. I aim to explore what happens to a piece of artwork when it is recreated, in the context of performance art, using Marina Abramovich’s series of performances Seven Easy Pieces as a case study.

It looks in depth at 1960s artists who used the medium of video technology to expand their practices and asks how contemporary artists have incorporated it into their work today. The artists who have been examined include Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci, Andy Warhol, Nam June Paik and Shigeko Kubota. Through exploring the various works and methods of these artists it is apparent they all have individual relationships with the medium, and their work has developed alongside video technology. Contemporary artists have expanded their practices in the same way by using the technology that is now available to them, such as the iPad and the internet.
