Such effects are likely to be more severe in climate change hotspots such as the Mediterranean region, including Italy. Objective To review existing literature on the relationship between climate change and mental health in Italy, with a particular focus on trauma and PTSD. Methods A scoping review methodology was used. We followed guidance for scoping reviews and the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. We searched for literature in MEDLINE, Global Health, Embase and PsycINFO. Following screening, data was extracted from individual papers and a quality assessment was conducted. Given the heterogeneity of studies, findings were summarized narratively. Results We identified 21 original research articles investigating the relationship between climate change and mental health in Italy. Climate change stressors (heat and heatwaves in particular) were found to have several negative effects on various mental health outcomes, such as a higher risk of mortality among people with mental health conditions, suicide and suicidal behaviour and psychiatric morbidity (e.g. psychiatric hospitalization and symptoms of mental health conditions). However, there is little research on the relationship between climate change and trauma or PTSD in the Italian context. Conclusions More attention and resources should be directed towards understanding the mental health implications of climate change to prevent, promote, and respond to the mental health needs of Italy and the wider Mediterranean region. HIGHLIGHTS • Climate change stressors in Italy were found to have detrimental impacts on various mental health outcomes, such as psychiatric mortality and morbidity. • Little research on the relationship between climate change stressors and PTSD exists in Italy.

Clinical research has examined the impact of different therapeutic approaches on wellbeing, symptoms, functioning and quality of life. However, it is abundantly clear that another important dimension comes into play when many policy, practice and commissioning decisions are taken. This is the economic dimension. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) therefore commissioned the authors to examine whether there is an economic case fr counselling and psychotherapy.

The discussion paper explores healthcare utilization of traumatized populations and proposes trauma-informed policies that may provide more patient-centric care, as well as improving the accountability and responsiveness of the healthcare system. The emergence of Trauma Informed Care in service contexts has endeavoured to incorporate an understanding of trauma into their organisational structures, treatment services and day-to-day practices to decrease healthcare utilization and costs. This paper speculates that the future Holy Grail of trauma field is to find traction on strategies aimed at bending the healthcare utilization and cost curve of trauma-related healthcare policies.

To conduct an economic evaluation of psychosocial care for unaccompanied foreign minors in Italy. Methods. Cost-effectiveness analysis was performed by comparing the current system of care with an Empirically Based Model (EBM) and by adopting both a health and social care and a societal perspective. If the EBM was successful in providing a more adequate care, cost savings could arise from reduced use of health and social care services, education support, and from problematic behaviours averted. Results. Results suggest that the EBM implementation could reduce service use and longer term adverse outcomes. The programme could be a cost saving to the health and social care system and to the society with a cost-benefit ratio of 1€: 2.36€ and an overall saving to society of 4,581,300 €. Conclusions. Psychosocial care is crucial to the well being of UAMs. These results underscore the importance of considering a more integrated system of care for promoting further cost-effective psychosocial programmes.

A similar expansion has occurred in the advances of Cross-Cultural Psychology and Psychiatry. Psychotraumatology has paid a significant amount of attention to evidence-based treatments and randomized controlled trials and has marginalized the cultural context of suffering (Mattar et al. 2010); consequently, the relationship between the role of culture and trauma research and treatment remains poorly understood. Considering the broad range and universality of traumatic experiences, what are then the dimensions of psychological trauma and what are the dimensions of cultural systems as they govern patterns of daily living? How do cultures create psychosocial mechanisms to assist its members who have suffered significant traumatic events? The special issue: “Trauma and culture. Implications for research and treatment” addresses the above questions and the need for critically integrating culture-competent studies and practices with psychotraumatology.
