With the advancement of web technology and an increase use of the web, a survey response collected through the web can be a viable low-cost alternative to the traditional mode of data collection. However, the reliability of the information obtained from an internet survey remains questionable. The authors employed a stochastic frontier regression model to calibrate the values obtained from the web-based survey. The researchers compared these values to the values obtained from on-site survey. The authors extended the analysis to estimate the economic impact of a nature based recreation on a local economy. The results indicate that with a careful calibration, a web-based survey can be used to understand the recreational use of respondents as well as to calculate the economic impacts of recreation-spending on a local economy.

Our study shows that, if individual’s primary purpose of trip is not only the costal recreations, then they are more likely to choose camping in Louisiana coasts. Similarly, bird watching is popular among those individuals, who visit the coast on the way of other goals. More flexible hours increases the probability of surf fishing reducing the likelihood of offshore fishing. Individuals, who give higher values to importance of environmental quality of the sites, are less likely to choose swimming. However, the individuals giving more value to physical characteristics of the site are more likely to choose camping. The result also states that increase in amount of time that an individual spend on coastal recreation increases the probability of choosing camping or surf fishing. Negative marginal effect of income for camping says the wealthier individual would not choose overnight...

Design/methodology/approach The authors used survey data collected from broiler producers in Louisiana, USA. The authors estimated several duration models that either considered event dependence or heterogeneity or both. Findings Results from the conditional frailty model indicated that large farms adopt BMPs earlier, farmers who have been in broiler farming profession for a long time are late to adopt BMPs and more informed farmers, through contact with extension agents and education, are early adopters of BMPs. Research limitations/implications The limitation of this study is that the authors did not validate the robustness of the conditional frailty model using a more rigorous approach, such as empirical simulation method. Practical implications Many farmers do not adopt a new technology immediately after it becomes av...

We used poisson and negative binomial models to estimate future demand of recreation trips to a closed site using internet and intercept surveys. Parameter estimates were validated using 1000 bootstrap replications. Result indicated a significant negative impact ...

Online surveys have emerged as low-cost data collection approach in empirical researches; however, the validity of data remains questionable. Therefore, we employed a stochastic frontier estimation method to calibrate online recreational expenditure. Study results ...
