According to Polanyi’s critique of liberal markets, by which liberalism is neither socially nor environmentally sustainable, I will use a case study, namely the pork industry in China, to explain and to show why it is not possible to discern economic development from socio-environmental and health issues. The foodregime’s theoretical framework will provide the necessary clues to understand not only the case of the Chinese agribusiness sector, but also the relations between politics and food at a global level. Furthermore there will be used also the foucauldian concept of governmentality, which will help in the understanding of the social implications of economic driven development. This paper will acknowledge the violent collision between the pursuit of food security (understood as cheap pork for all in China) within the framework of the corporate food regime and the global need for sustainable development.
