Univi is a mobile prototype designed in four sprints (one month). It's an
online banking solution that focuses on saving, investment, and advises the user on the
common day-to-day financial adversities. Univi looks easy, appealing, fresh. Most
importantly, it puts the users always in control, by making very clear
that the app isn't messing with their money.
Target and challenge
The user base for this project consists of people in the 18-30 age range.
The main requirements were transparency and
friendliness. Univi needed to be
easily understandable by people without any specific knowledge regarding
investment or saving strategies.
Problems solved
No matter the speed of the banking partners involved, opening an account
requires several days. Asking for all the information immediately, and
then leaving the user in standby at the end of the process, isn't a good solution.
The user is stuck after a long setup:
To avoid frustration and increase retention,
data/account verification is triggered immediately. Meanwhile, the user can
setup the app and fine-tune the preferences.
For presentation purposes, the UX flow below has been simplified:
Outcomes and achievements
The UX study, basic branding, and a lo-fi prototype were released in the incredibly short
time span of just one month. Thanks to the really general user base, we
were able to validate the UX flows every release cycle (weekly). Built to
validate a customer idea, the prototype eventually helped the
entrepreneur behind this project pitch his idea for a
successful seed round.
Welcome screens
The welcome screens empathize with the user by showing
common people living their daily life.
Dashboard and settings
Every section of the app is reachable, with a maximum of
three taps, from the tab bar
located at the bottom of the screen.
The accounts
Checking, savings, and
investment screens can be reached by swiping the top bar and are
distinguished by a specific color.
Investment setup
Fast, clear, straight-forward: in three steps the user can commit to a monthly
investment. To build trust, and put the
user in control, the automatic transactions always require a manual
approval.
Manual transfers
To avoid the triggering of short-term capital gains, and to ensure the
tax gain/loss harvesting algorithms work at their best, the withdraw feature for the
investment account is found on the settings screen.
Responsibilities
I worked on this project as a lead designer and
product manager.
Main areas of responsibility:
- Management (sprint planning and weekly reviews)
- UX analysis (flows and persona)
- Design (app, website and branding)
- Lo-fi prototyping (basic flow and interactions)
- Front-end development (website)
The final prototype
A lo-fi prototype was developed. It lacks custom transitions and animations. By keeping it
at this stage, we've been able to
test the idea and assess the risk points, immediately.
