Some notes on this property

edit

Japanese magazine code (P8473) is a code used in book distribution networks in Japan, assigned for magazines and other publication products (including comics, mooks, CDs, DVDs, and others) treated as magazines on the networks. The 5-digit code is printed as "雑誌 00000-00" and also used as a component of POS barcodes, usually on the back cover. However, it shows some peculiarity in comparison to other identifiers:

  • The 5-digit code is sometimes modified to convey other information, i.e. the week of the month, or supplement/additional publications. For example, a weekly magazine was assigned with 39991, but the September 16 issue has 39993-09 as the printed code.
  • The code is designed for distribution purposes, so it is unique only within distribution stock at a time point. When a magazine has been discontinued, the assigned code will be reused for another magazine after some time.
