Electrical steel, also known as silicon steel, is a ferromagnetic material that is often used in ... more Electrical steel, also known as silicon steel, is a ferromagnetic material that is often used in electric vehicles (EVs) for stator and rotor applications. Since the design and manufacturing of rotors require the use of laminated thin electrical steel sheets, the fatigue characterization of these single sheets is of interest. In this study, a 0.27mm thick non-oriented electrical steel sheet was tested under cyclic loading in the load-controlled mode with the load ratio R = 0.1 at room temperature. The specimens were prepared using the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining method. The Smith-Watson-Topper mean stress correction was used to find the equivalent fully reversed stress-life (S-N) curve. The Basquin equation was used to describe the fatigue strength of the electrical steel and the fatigue parameters were extracted. They are typically comprised of laminated stacks of thin electrical steel sheets. An electric motor can reach high temperatures under a heavy load, and it is important to understand the combined effect of temperature and load on the electrical steel’s performance to ensure the long life and safety of electric vehicles.This study investigated the fatigue strength and failure behavior of a 0.27mm thick electrical steel sheet, where the samples were prepared by a stamping process. Stress-control fatigue tests were performed at both room temperature and 150°C. The S-N curve indicated a decrease in the fatigue strength of the samples at the elevated temperature compared to the room temperature by 15-25 MPa in the LCF and HCF regimes, respectively. Dual Phase (DP) steel, composed of a ferrite matrix with dispersed islands of martensite, has bec... more Dual Phase (DP) steel, composed of a ferrite matrix with dispersed islands of martensite, has become popular in auto-body car construction due to its outstanding mechanical properties (i.e., high strength and good ductility). DP steel softens at the sub-critical heat-affected zone (SC-HAZ) when subjected to welding thermal cycles, owing to the tempering of the martensite phase. In this work, DP980 steel was subjected to varied thermal cycles: (a) furnace-tempering treatment, (b) gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and (c) resistance spot welding (RSW), in order to characterize the tempering of martensite below the Ac1 critical temperature and at the sub-critical heat-affected zone (SC-HAZ) in the case of the welded specimens. Fibre laser welds of Fe-0.15C-10Mn-1.5Al medium-Mn transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel... more Fibre laser welds of Fe-0.15C-10Mn-1.5Al medium-Mn transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel and its dissimilar combination with high strength low alloy (HSLA) and dual-phase (DP980) steel was assessed with respect to microstructure, microhardness, formability, and tensile properties. The fusion zone (FZ) of the medium-Mn TRIP steel weldment was consist of predominantly martensite with some interdendritic austenite due to high manganese concentration which stabilizes austenite. The FZ of dissimilar combinations to HSLA and DP980 steel consisted of mostly martensite. Microhardness profiles of the medium-Mn TRIP steel showed no indications of detrimental heat-affected zone (HAZ) softening despite the high base metal (BM) hardness (396 HV). Laser welds containing medium-Mn TRIP displayed similar FZ hardness values (413–438 HV). In this study, the progression of martensite tempering as a function of tempering parameter has b... more In this study, the progression of martensite tempering as a function of tempering parameter has been investigated using instrumented nanoindentation. Three distinct stages of tempering related to the carbon segregation, carbide nucleation, and Ostwald ripening were identified. During the second tempering stage, the nanohardness achieves a plateau which is attributed to the change of carbide morphology, dissolution of intra-lath carbides, and growth of inter-lath and block boundary carbides.
