It was titled the contribution of Queen Elizabeth National Park to the local people’s livelihoods. The study mainly assessed the role of the park towards livelihoods of the local people. The purpose of this study was to identify ways in which Queen Elizabeth National Park has contributed to livelihoods and to prove that tourism is an important tool to improve livelihoods. The objectives of the study were to assess the economic opportunities available to communities due to presence of Queen Elizabeth National park, to assess the challenges facing local people around Queen Elizabeth National park and then to assess the challenges facing Queen Elizabeth National Park from the local people. In order to achieve these objectives, the study questionnaires were made to help collect data and in the whole study both qualitative and quantitative information collected was subsequently used in the analysis of data. Using the results of the study and data from the secondary sources, the study established that Queen Elizabeth National Park has some contribution it leaves in the livelihoods of local people some of which are positive while others are negative and this report calls them challenges. These contributions include source of raw materials, employments, rainfall formation and rebel hideouts among others. Tourism development was suitable tool for influencing people’s livelihoods in the study area. This was evidenced by the fact that the several people in the area were involved in several tourism related activities and among the activities include, supply of tourist related products and services like tour guiding services, sale of handcrafts, and supply of agricultural products to hotels, lodges, restaurants around the park and also the park contributes to employment opportunities, creation of market for local goods and services. The study also identified the economic opportunities and these include guiding, luggage carrying and animal rearing. To meet the goal of using Queen Elizabeth National Park to improve livelihoods, the study recommended government to develop a new tourism investment policy which ensures sound and direct investment in areas to meet national, social and economic goals and also encourage cooperation of all stake holders in the making of planning and making decisions aimed at using tourism development to improve livelihoods.
