For the past four years, four different cohorts of students from the Science and Technology progr... more For the past four years, four different cohorts of students from the Science and Technology program at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD have performed their senior research projects at the Howard University Beltsville Research Campus in Beltsville, MD. The projects have focused generally on the testing and correction of low-cost sensors and development of instrumentation for use in profiling the lower atmosphere. Specifically, we have developed a low-cost tethersonde system and used it to carry aloft a low-cost instrument that measures particulate matter (PM) as well as a standard radiosonde measuring temperature, pressure and relative humidity. The low-cost PM sensor was found to provide artificially high values of PM under conditions of elevated relative humidity likely due to the presence of hygroscopic aerosols. <p>Ten years of almost continuous observations at the highest Global Atmosp... more <p>Ten years of almost continuous observations at the highest Global Atmosphere Watch Regional station in the world are presented here. The Chacaltaya observatory (5240 m asl, 16.3ºS, 68.1ºW) was set up in December 2011. It is currently the only operational station characterizing optical and chemical properties of climate-relevant aerosol and gases in Bolivia and in a radius of about 1500 kilometers from the station. The observations show a clear influence of the well-marked dry and wet meteorological seasons. In addition, the impact on the Andean mountains of long and mid-range transport of biomass burning products from the lowlands is clearly recorded in different parameters measured at the station. Furthermore, the nearby presence of the largest metropolitan area in the region (~1.8 million inhabitants) is observed almost on a daily basis, and therefore different campaigns were carried out to characterize the area and its influence on our measurements. Specific results from these campaigns are discussed elsewhere. Finally, the topographic complexity represents an important challenge for modeling efforts in order to understand sources and sinks (and associated processes) of the observed parameters, requiring not only high spatial resolution and the correct choice of model options, but a novel way of interpreting these results. The decade of collaboration of an international consortium made it possible to keep the station running successfully. The challenge is now to preserve its functioning for the coming decades in a region with historically few high-quality observations while disrupting environmental and socio-economic changes take place.</p>
SUMMARY The importance of particulate matter transport over the Andean glaciers has recently grow... more SUMMARY The importance of particulate matter transport over the Andean glaciers has recently grown because new studies have suggested that at least part of the local warming at the Himalayas might be due to transport of particles to this region. In the Andean region the rapid retreat of glaciers and a moderate increase in temperature suggest that particulate matter product of biomass burning could also be playing a role in the observed glacier recession. Satellite imagery from MODIS, measurements from photometers as well as in-situ measurements were used to try to characterize some optical and chemical properties of particulate matter arriving to the Andean region. Backward trajectories and electronic microscopy were also used for this purpose. Preliminary results are reported here. In addition, the implementation of a new GAW station at Chacaltaya (5200 masl; 16°21’S, 68°07’W) is discussed in this context.

This field campaign took place between December 2017 and June 2018 (wet to dry season) at Chacaltaya (CHC), a GAW (Global Atmosphere Watch) station located at 5,240 m MSL in the Bolivian Andes. Concurrent measurements were conducted at two additional sites in El Alto (4,000 m MSL) and La Paz (3,600 m MSL). The overall goal of the campaign was to identify the sources, understand the formation mechanisms and transport, and characterize the properties of aerosol at these stations. State-of-the-art instruments were brought to the station complementing the ongoing permanent GAW measurements, to allow a comprehensive description of the chemical species of anthropogenic and biogenic origin impacting the station and contributing to new particle formation. In Part II of this chapter, we intend to show the significant advances and results concerning aer... more In Part II of this chapter, we intend to show the significant advances and results concerning aerosols’ tropospheric monitoring in South America. The tropospheric lidar monitoring is also supported by the Latin American Lidar Network (LALINET). It is concerned about aerosols originating from urban pollution, biomass burning, desert dust, sea spray, and other primary sources. Cloud studies and their impact on radiative transfer using tropospheric lidar measurements are also presented.

Se analizan los datos de once lanzamientos de sondas de ozono realizados en la region de La Paz (... more Se analizan los datos de once lanzamientos de sondas de ozono realizados en la region de La Paz ( 3400 m snm) en el mes de Junio de 1998. Se estudia el comportamiento de variables como la temperatura, la altura de la tropopausa, el contenido troposferico de ozono, la distribucion estratosferica del ozono y el valor integral del mismo. Se comparan los resultados obtenidos en esa campana con los datos de un trabajo similar realizado en 1963 en la misma localidad con el fin de poner en evidencia eventuales modificaciones en la atmosfera local. Se discute tambien un posible origen de la disminucion del ozono total sobre las tierras altas tropicales.

The Latin American Lidar Network (LALINET) is the aerosol lidar network operating over South Amer... more The Latin American Lidar Network (LALINET) is the aerosol lidar network operating over South America. LALINET is now an operative network performing a schedule of routine measurements and, currently, is composed by 9 stations distributed over South America. The main objective of LALINET is to generate a consistent and statistically relevant database to enhance the understanding of the particle distribution over the continent and its direct and indirect influence on climate. The creation of an un-biased spatiotemporal database requires a throughout review of the network on two pillars: instrumentation and data processing. Because most of the LALINET systems are not series-produced instruments and, therefore, present large differences in configuration and capabilities, attempts for network harmonization and, consequently, optimization are mandatory. In this study a review of the current instrumental status of all LALINET systems is done and analyzed in detail in order to assess the potential performance of the network and to detect networking weaknesses.

There are significant activities regarding laser remote sensing of the atmosphere at different levels for different purposes. Among these activities, we can mention the mesospheric probing of sodium measurements and stratospheric monitoring of ozone, and the study of wind and gravity waves. Some of these activities are long-lasting and count on the support from the Latin American Lidar Network (LALINET).
