The right assessment should be able to measure what should be measured so that the assessing activity can provide information about the achievement level of the learning activity. Critical reading is a reading activity engaging the process of analyzing and evaluating thoroughly, observing carefully every single idea, information, statement or argument stated on the text and do not directly accept what is delivered by the writer. The readers realize that the passage contains not only explicit information which needs to be memorized but also needs to be understood, analyzed and addressed. Before addressing the whole meaning, the reading passage should be processed critically through the higher thinking process. This research was conducted in order to describe the ability of critical reading of the XI students of SMAN I Gurah Kediri. The special purpose of this research is to describe the ability of focusing, collecting information, memorizing, organizing, analyzing, generalizing, integrating, and evaluating in critical reading. This research belongs to descriptive quantitative research. The data of this research is in form of students’ critical reading score. It was obtained from written test done by the students of XI grades SMAN I Gurah Kediri. The population of this research was all of XI students in SMAN I Gurah Kediri, while the sample used in this research was 30% out of the total amount of XI graders, which is XI-MIA1 and XI-MIA2. The result of the research shows that ability of critical reading of XI students of SMAN I Gurah is almost in fair category (46,5%). The second category which is ”Good” gains 32,5%, the third category which is ”Poor” gains 16,2%, and the last category, Very Good, reaches 4,6%. There are not any students own critical reading ability in ”Poor” category. Based on that percentage, it can be concluded that the students ability in critical reading can be classified in ”Fair” which the obtained score is between 56 and 65. Based on the deep discussion, there are some factors influencing the students’ answer. They include (1) lack of accuracy, (2) students’ inability in relating the main idea of the whole paragraph, (3) students’ inability in relating the main idea of each paragraphs. Those factors cause the difficulty in answering the question concerning about focusing, collecting information, and memorizing. Besides, the students inability in constructing the order and determining the classification become the students’ constraint in answering the questions related to organizing. The students’ inability in determining and choosing the effective sentence becomes the students’ constraint in answering the question about analyzing. Finally, the students’ inability in uniting the data becomes the cause the students’ error in answering the questions concerning about generalizing. Next, the factors that influence the students’ error in integrating was the inability of the students to combine the new information and the information they have owned to become a good construction. The last for evaluating stage, the students’ ability in arguing completed with supporting data is still low so that the students’ assessment for the passage is less qualified. It is suggested that the teacher make reading question which contain not only question based on the literal level but also some analyzing and evaluating activities.
