I would like to thank Bo Tang and Sumitha Sinha for responding so quickly to my interview request and participating in answering the questions prepared for them and especially Bo Tang for supporting me with the dissertation in all aspects. I would also like to notify the reader about my usage of the word " slum " in the dissertation. According to Un-Habitat, the definition of slum means a group of individuals living under the same roof in an urban area who lack one of or more of the following: 1.Durable housing of a permanent nature that protects against extreme climate conditions. 2.Sufficient living space which means not more than three people sharing the same room. 3.Easy access to safe water in sufficient amounts at an affordable price. 4.Access to adequate sanitation in the form of a private or public toilet shared by a reasonable number of people. 5.Security of tenure that prevents forced evictions. The word slum is often misused and can be seen as something negative while the more accurate word for a lot of settlements in developing cities would be " informal settlements ". Informal Settlements are all different and some might only lack one of the criterion in un-habitats definition of slum, others might lack more. Different settlements have different characters and needs and should be viewed individually. However for the sake of simplifying things, in this dissertation I am adopting the word " slum " which is already widely used by natural aid agencies to describe different types of settlements around the world. 2
