Division of Hematology & Oncology

The Hematology/Oncology Division is devoted to state-of-the-art and compassionate treatment in malignant and non-malignant blood disorders, hemostasis and thrombosis, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapeutics, and solid tumor oncology. We are committed to improving care for tomorrow’s patients and have robust clinical trials and translational research programs. Our 35 hematologists/oncologists provide care at our outpatient facilities at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center or in our Community Oncology sites in Fishersville, Culpeper, and Charlottesville (Pantops location). We provide comprehensive care in our inpatient Hematology/Oncology and stem cell units and on the hematology and oncology consultation services.

Experimental Treatment Sends Deadly Leukemia into Remission

Dr. Thomas P. Loughran Jr., director of the University of Virginia Cancer Center, discusses an experimental new treatment approach for a rare, deadly leukemia that can send the disease into remission even in patients for whom the standard therapy has failed, buying them more time to have the stem cell transplant that could save their lives.

New Lung Cancer Treatment Available at UVA Health

A new lung cancer treatment that UVA doctors helped develop has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. “This new treatment is an antibody that is added on to chemotherapy, increasing the likelihood of tumor shrinkage and extending the duration in which the cancer can be controlled compared to chemotherapy alone,” said Dr. Ryan Gentzler.

Umbilical cord blood transplants shown to improve survival rates for blood cancer patients, regardless of race

“We’re really excited that we see that the outcomes for patients after this type of transplant, the umbilical cord blood transplant, is now equivalent among all different races and ethnicities,” said Dr. Karen Ballen, the Medical Director of the Stem Cell Transplant Program at the UVA Cancer Center.

Meet UVA Medical Oncologist, Dr. Ryan Gentzler

Dr. Gentzler’s clinical focus is the treatment of patients with lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. His research is centered around the development of novel therapies for lung cancer. His goal is to contribute meaningful research that leads to improvements in the curability, survival, and quality of life for patients with lung cancer.

Meet UVA Hematologist/Oncologist, Karen Ballen, MD

Dr. Ballen is Division Chief of Hematology and Oncology, Section Head, Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation, and Medical Director - Stem Cell Transplantation Program. Here research interests are in novel treatments for acute leukemia, stem cell transplantation, cord blood transplantation, haploidentical transplantation, immunotherapy treatment for hematologic malignancies.
