Access to the instruments will be via an interface to a Virtual Instrument Grid Service (VIGS). VIGS is a new concept and its design and implementation together with middleware that can provide the appropriate quality of service is a key part of the GRIDCC development plan. An overall architecture for GRIDCC has been defined and some of the application areas, which include distributed power systems, remote control of an accelerator and the remote monitoring of a large particle physics experiment, are briefly discussed. The goal of GRIDCC [1] is to build a widely distributed system that is able to remotely control and monitor complex instrumentation that ranges from a set of sensors used by geophysical stations monitoring the state of the earth to a network of small power generators supplying the European power grid. These applications introduce requirements for r...

Different machine learning techniques have been applied to analyse a dataset composed by 28,353 start-ups. The results we obtained are partially satisfying and suggest that Big Data methods could fail in the presence of highly unbalanced samples. After re-balancing the sample and using statistical techniques aimed at generating artificial samples, we were able to obtain some promising, even if preliminary, results. Our study advances our knowledge about the use of Big Data science in the managerial research and in understanding the limits and caveats of its use

The facility is located in Trieste, Italy, nearby the third-generation synchrotron light source Elettra. Three experimental stations (Fig. 1), dedicated to different scientific areas, have been installed in 2011: Low Density Matter (LDM), Elastic and Inelastic Scattering (EIS) and Diffraction and Projection Imaging (DiProI). The experiment control and data acquisition system is the natural extension of the machine control system. It integrates a shot-by-shot data acquisition framework with a centralized data storage and analysis system. Low-level applications for data acquisition and online processing have been developed using the Tango framework on Linux platforms. High-level experimental applications can be developed on both Linux and Windows platforms using C/C++, Python, LabView, IDL or Matlab. Most notably systems like the simple email, chatting software, video calls, collaboration boards, and social networking platforms are widely used daily both for personal and professional purposes. The challenges introduced by the COVID-19 crisis required a prompt and effective response that was mostly based on existing technologies but also promoted the development of new ones. Elettra took multiple strategic actions in order to continue its service towards the scientific community. Such actions included the continuous operation of the ELETTRA synchrotron and FERMI FEL accelerators coupled with preferential and fast track proposal management with mail-in services. In addition to that, it funded an internal project for introducing remotisation technologies to its beamlines thus assisting thei...

Various working groups mostly associated with the EU project BrightnESS aim at developing solutions for its data-intensive challenges. The real-time data management and aggregation is among the top priorities. The Apache KAFKA framework will be the base for ESS real-time distributed data streaming. One of the major challenges is the simulation of data streams from experimental data generation to data analysis and storage. This presentation outlines a simulation approach based on the DonkiOrchestra data acquisition and experiment control framework, re-purposed as a data streaming simulation system compatible with the ESS-KAFKA infrastructure.

It is based on a single-pass free electron laser consisting in a 1.5-GeV normal-conducting linac and two chains of undulators where the photon beams are produced with a seeded laser multistage mechanism. The control system interfaces to and controls all devices and systems of the facility. The hardware architecture has been designed using commercial components and open standards, and a software environment based on GNU/Linux and the Tango control system is deployed on all computers. The safety and protection systems rely on a well established technology based on PLCs. A real-time infrastructure based on a dedicated Ethernet network and a real-time implementation of Linux provides centralized shot-by-shot data acquisition at the linac repetition rate, as well as synchronized setting of the controlled variables required to implement feedback loops.
FERMI@Elettra is a new 4 th -generation light source based on a seeded Free Electron Laser (FEL) ... more FERMI@Elettra is a new 4 th -generation light source based on a seeded Free Electron Laser (FEL) presently under commissioning in Trieste, Italy. It is the first seeded FEL ever designed to produce fundamental output wavelength down to 4 nm with High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG). Unlike storage ring based synchrotron light sources that are well known machines, the commissioning of a new-concept FEL is a complex and time-consuming process consisting in thorough testing, understanding and optimization, in which a reliable and powerful control system is mandatory. In particular, integrated shot-by-shot beam manipulation capabilities and easy-to-use high level applications are crucial to allow an effective and smooth machine commissioning. This paper reports the status of the control system and the experience gained in two years of alternating construction and commissioning phases.

However, a considerable amount of start-ups cannot achieve fast growth or even grow at all. Consequently, start-ups have received increasing attention from both scholars and policy makers to understand which factors trigger, support or hinder their growth. In recent decades, empirical studies on this subject have proliferated, applying numerous theoretical perspectives and proposing various hypotheses to understand the role of specific drivers in stimulating the growth of the start-up firm. The drivers considered include bundles of resources and capabilities, the composition of the founding team, the strategy and business model adopted, and the characteristics of the context where the start-up is located. Despite this abundance of perspectives and drivers the accumulated evidence remains largely inconclusive. The purpose of this thesis is to shed light on the phenomenon of the growth ...

Moreover, this study identifies drivers whose support roles are confirmed in the literature and recommends further research opportunities.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, we analysed the results of 316 empirical studies on start-up firms and growth and also identified and categorised 66 growth drivers. We presented these drivers in three-dimensional charts: 1) the frequency of using each driver in the 316 studies, 2) the consistency of each driver as measured by the number of studies supporting its statistical significance and 3) the net effect (positive or negative) of each driver on growth.FindingsOur analysis compares extant studies on growth drivers and shows some under-explored growth factors of start-up firms.Practical implicationsBoth start-up managers and policymakers can benefit from this...

The study is based on a survey involving 267 new ventures from high-tech industries. The results highlight the importance of pursuing higher efficiency over the life cycle of a start-up, although not at the moment of its establishment. In relation to business model ambidexterity, the findings highlight the different effect that contextual ambidexterity can have on the growth performance of a start-up firm in different stages of its life cycle. While initial ambidexterity is found to have a negative effect on growth performance, successive increases in the level of ambidexterity have a positive influence on growth.
