Now that Śākyamuni Buddha is not among us, who is it that actively works save the sattva in this corrupt Saha-world in his place?
By spotlighting the bodhisattvas that appear in the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, this paper seeks to answer the abovementioned question, raised in Chapter I.
In Chapter II, the famous bodhisattvas whose names can be seen in the Miàofǎ-liánhuá-jīng (妙法蓮華経) are studied. Based on this preliminary study, crosschecking with the Zhèngfǎhuā-jīng (正法華経) and the Sanskrit-texts of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, the names of 43 bodhisattvas can be clearly confirmed as appearing in the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra.
In Chapter III, the 43 bodhisattvas are divided into categories using the following criteria:
1. Bodhisattvas of a past world, bodhisattvas of a future world, and bodhisattvas of the present world.
2. Bodhisattvas who do not speak (silent bodhisattvas), and bodhisattvas who utter words (speaking bodhisattvas).
3. Bodhisattvas that exist in this corrupt Saha-world, bodhisattvas from other worlds hat came to this world, and bodhisattvas that came to this world from the world below.
After classifying the bodhisattvas into these three categories and clarifying the attributes of each, it is confirmed that there are five bodhisattvas who teach the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra as Dharmabhāṇaka: Varaprabha (妙光), Jñānākara (智積), Mañjuśrī (文殊師利), Sadāparibhūta (常不軽), and Gadgadasvara (妙音). Additionally, the newly-established hypothesis that the first chapter (序品) of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra was the last chapter to be included, and is therefore the newest of all the chapters, is presented.
Chapter IV details how the sutra develops from Chapter 11 (見宝塔品) to Chapter 22 (嘱累品), describes four groups of Bodhisattvas: 1 Bodhisattvas in the Saha world, 2 Bodhisattvas who were enlightened through Yākaraṇa by the Buddha and could therefore advance from Śrāvaka to Vyāvartana, 3 Bodhisattvas who came to the Saha world from other worlds, and 4 Bodhisattvas who came to the Saha world from the worlds below the Saha world, and presents a novel hypothesis on the location of Anuparindana-parivarta (嘱累品) from the perspective of the genesis and formation of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra.
In the conclusion in Chapter V, it is pointed out that in the six chapters of Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra from Chapter 23 (薬王菩薩本事品) to Chapter 28 (普賢菩薩勧発品) bodhisattvas who express the vow to spread the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra in the post-nirvana world are protected by other bodhisattvas, and concludes that it is the bodhisattvas who are trying to uphold this sutra who are the ones who will inherit the mission of Śākyamuni Buddha.
