I have developed expertise on quantitative methods especially in survey design, testing reliability and validity of data collection instruments, multivariate analysis of data, and research with children and young people and their subjective well-being from the research I did in the Third Sector for almost 6 years and Higher Education for over 2 years. Prior to joining the Department of Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University, I designed, developed, and taught courses on quantitative methods for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in sociology for over 4 years. In teaching quantitative methods, I use real life examples from my own research. I believe this is crucial to explain the relevance and correct application of statistical techniques in social research which otherwise can be abstract and alien to many learners. I am currently providing expertise on quantitative methods and subjective well-being to a European Commission funded project called MYWEB (Measuring Youth Well-Being).
The study of subjective wellbeing has received increasing interest among social science researche... more The study of subjective wellbeing has received increasing interest among social science researchers and policy makers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there appears to be a gap in the knowledge in terms of how the children experienced the pandemic, which may be different from the experience encountered by the adults. This article fills this gap by (a) examining children’s self-reported experience of the pandemic in Bangladesh and (b) identifying the socio-demographic, economic and psycho-social factors which were associated with their subjective wellbeing during the pandemic in the country. For this purpose, a child friendly questionnaire was developed, and a survey was conducted among 1370 children aged 10–12 years. The disruption caused by the pandemic was evident in children’s reporting of the movement of families from their usual place of living, job losses by their parents, food poverty, digital divide, and fear of the pandemic. Progress in tackling these goals require robust evidence, such as can be provided by high quality survey data. Birth cohort surveys are an important source of evidence for policy makers seeking to protect and enhance the lives of children as they grow up. Until now such surveys have been developed independently and in order to compare data in different countries there are many challenges in post-hoc data harmonisation. The merits of collecting national longitudinal data are widely recognised, and yet the current studies are not easily comparable as they contain different questions and are conducted at different times and on different age groups. It is, therefore, time for an input harmonised comparative birth cohort survey. The European Cohort Development Project has been developing the design and business case for such a survey since 2018. This survey will allow a direct comparison of the well-being of children as they grow up across Europe in different national contexts. In the future, researchers the world over will be able to learn from the lived experiences of children and young people as they grow up in a diverse range of European countries.

In addition, variability exists among European nations as to the availability and coverage of sampling frames, laws and regulations that restrict aspects of survey practice, availability and capacity of survey research organisations, cultural and behavioural norms, language(s) spoken, geographical dispersal of the study populations. Furthermore, research involving children and young people requires ethical considerations including how the children and young people can and should be involved in a study with reference to the degree of control and participation that they have.
