Baker et al. (2003) identified that there is an increased risk of mental disorders in young children, aged between 3 and 5 who have intellectual disabilities. Children who had an intellectual disability demonstrated higher levels of challenging behaviours, as well as recording that parental stress was higher for children with delays, and noting that the stress the parents felt increased the intensity of the child's behaviour. Previous research proposes that children presenting with intellectual difficulties demonstrate maladaptive behaviours by their preschool years.
