Manipulation is inherently incentive, aimed at exerting covert infl uence and inducing the recipi... more Manipulation is inherently incentive, aimed at exerting covert infl uence and inducing the recipient to the actions necessary for the manipulator. Such control is, fi rst of all, the control of the mind, i.e. the beliefs of the recipients, and indirect control of their actions, with their beliefs being manipulated. This paper explores pragmatics of manipulative techniques in English literary discourse. Manipulation happens in implicit communication. Reading between the lines and explicating the implications of a text has become a primary focus in literary analysis. The analysis of linguistic material is carried out by means of discourse approach and pragmalinguistic method of research. The relevance of this study is determined by the need to cover all forms of interpersonal manipulation in fi ctional dialogue: deception, pressuring, and exploiting emotional vulnerability or character defects. The analysis showed that exploiting emotional vulnerability occurs much more frequently in fi ctional dialogue than other forms of manipulation. The investigation has focused on manipulative techniques as closely related to narrative irony. In a short story or a novel, narrative irony serves as scaff olding for using manipulation, viz. for creating the situation favourable for accomplishing the manipulator's scheme.

In the present study, the objective of the study is to identify the linguistic features of the ironical mode of literary discourse in accordance with the idea of situational irony as mode of literary discourse. In accordance with this goal, the work sets the following tasks: 1) to consider approaches to the analysis of situational irony in modern linguistics; 2) to explore the characteristic features of ironic situations; 3) to consider the types of situational irony in English short stories. The analysis of language material is carried out by means of genre approach, pragmalinguistic and stylistic methods of research. In this study, the principle of organizing a short story is based on the classification of events by J. Lucariello, which represents 7 types of ironical script. The principle of organizing a story is based on a certain discrepancy of an ironical script with the generally accepted script. The classification of ironical events by J. Lucariello, therefore, can rather be called the classification of violations or deviations. Ironic schemes are activated when some combination of the following four characteristics is found in a situation: unexpectedness, human frailty, outcome, and opposition. The analysis of the material showed that the imbalances script is most frequently used, viz. such subtypes as temporal, contextual imbalances and role reversal. The stories abound in emotional lexis, lexical repetition, syntactic parallelism and indirect politeness strategies. They are designed to create an ironic effect, thereby involving the reader in the dialogue with the author. In addition, by way of situational irony the writer conveys a certain moral message to the reader. These linguistic features of short stories characterize them as a sample of the ironical mode of literary discourse. The strategy of foregrounding, which can be achieved either via deviation or parallelism, is typically conceived as the deviation from daily language, and is closely associated with novelty and aesthetic appreciation. Whereas defamiliarization is viewed as the technique focusing on the unusual setting, or unexpected angle of vision to make it foregrounded. After the survey of different views of the above-mentioned strategies, an attempt is made to verify that both strategies are used to indicate the turning points in the story. However, in contradistinction to discourse markers, they operate indirectly in literary discourse, creating stylistic effects on the phonetic, grammatical, or semantic levels. A major technique for sustaining structural irony is the use of a naïve protagonist or unreliable narrator who continually interprets events and intentions in ways that the author signals are mistaken [1, 45].This paper sets out to investigate structural irony as the organizational principle in English literary discourse. After a survey of different views of structural irony, an attempt is made to verify that the pragmalinguistic techniques, viz. the play on double meaning, echoic mentioning of the word or phrase, the use of emphatic structures in free indirect speech, and repetition of patterns of behavior, are employed in constructing structural irony.
