Croatian Studies Centre
In 1994 the Croatian Studies Centre was established within the School of Modern Languages. The Centre provides learning programs for the Croatian language, culture and history at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The Centre also has a comprehensive library of Croatian publications and books, and provides an archive facility for the CSF.
Research
The Centre is engaged in academic research and publication activities, and supports and organises conferences and symposia. A scholarly peer-refereed journal the Croatian Studies Review, which is published in English from 1997 and enables the Centre's research to be available to Croatian and non-Croatian speaking readers. The Centre has independently and in conjunction with institutions in Croatia, published over 20 books, as part of university project with the co-operation of the Croatian community in Australia and New Zealand.
The Centre has organised five international conferences in 1988, 1993, 1997, 2003, 2009 and in February 2014 as part of the 30th Anniversary of Croatian Studies at Macquarie University. The employees of the Centre have participated in a number of projects together with the Foundation and the wider Croatian community. As a highlight, the presentation of Croatian Studies at the Language Expo in Melbourne (1992), Brisbane (1994) and Sydney (1996) together with the participation in a number of conferences, summer schools and other seminars in Croatia.
Study Programs
In the last five years, the average number of student enrolments per year, has exceeded 100, which demonstrates the growing level of interest in learning the Croatian language.
There are several options available to students who wish to learn/study Croatian language at Macquarie University. The Centre offers award program Diploma in Croatian, which is HECS funded and available directly through Macquarie University. Students can apply for:
1. A Single Unit, (Non-award program, this is open to everyone); the cost is approx. $1,200 per language unit.
2. Diploma in Croatian (To enroll in a Diploma you need to have a Bachelor's Degree or be enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree at an Australian university. This program can take up to three years to complete. Once you achieve 18 credit points in the Diploma with GPA of 2.0 you are eligible to transfer to BA).
3. Part of a Macquarie University BA Degree (Students can major in Croatian).
