On the example of the protagonist (Walter) the reader learns about the repercussions which can be caused by the aggressive (death) drive dominance over the other drives. But in order to protect a personality, one might subconsciously redirect the unconscious drives, so that according to Freud, everyone has his/her own defense mechanisms. In Walter Mitty’s case, fantasies act as a defense.
