Although most of the masses in the neck region are caused by inflammation, in the absence of inflammation, a neoplastic expression must be considered. Although the metastasis of cervical lymph nodes primarily expresses head and neck carcinomas, distant metastasis from other origins must also be considered. In the current article, we present a unique case of cervical lymph node metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in which the first sign of the esophageal cancer is massive cervical mass without any other complaints. A 57-year-old woman presented with 7-month history of a growing swelling on the right neck region. Despite a week of antibiotherapy prescribed by other physicians, the volume of the mass had continued growing. Physical examination of the neck revealed a painless, solid, nontender, huge mass in the right supraclavicular region. Computerized tomography of the neck with c...

Patients who underwent TORP ossiculoplasty were divided into two groups. The TORP-alone group consisted of 32 patients who underwent TORP placement without cartilage shoe graft and served as the control group. The study group consisted of 56 patients who underwent placement of cartilage shoe graft together with TORP. Pure-tone audiometry was administered to all patients before and 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery. Indications for surgery, surgical technique used, postoperative complications, and air and bone conduction thresholds at 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz were recorded for all patients. No significant difference in postoperative air-bone gaps was observed between the groups. The number of patients with air-bone gaps less than 20 dB was 14 (25%) in the study group and 8 (25%) in the control group. There was no significant difference in changes in air-bone gaps between the groups. Dislocation of the prosthesis was observed in 3 patients in the study group (5.3%) and 4 in the control group (12.5%). There was less dislocation of the prosthesis in the study group, but the difference was not statistically significant. Placement of a cartilage graft between the footplate of the stapes and the foot of the prosthesis may have positive effects on long-term hearing improvement and rates of prosthesis displacement. Further research with larger patient numbers is needed to identify the advantages of shoe graft.

The study population consisted of 67 patients with allergic rhinitis and 31 healthy controls (14 males and 17 females, mean age 30.1+/-6.8 years). The patients were divided into two groups: an untreated patient Group of 32 patients, 17 males and 15 females, mean age 29.9+/-6.5 years and a levocetirizine-treated with 5mg.day(-1) for 4 weeks patient Group, consisted of 35 patients, 16 males and 19 females, mean age 33.5+/-7.8 years. All patients and healthy controls underwent salivary glands scintigraphy. After the intravenous administration of 185 MBq of (99m)Tc-P, dynamic salivary glands scintigraphy was performed for 25 min. By the time-activity curves, the following glandular function parameters were calculated for the parotid and submandibular salivary glands: uptake ...

A 30-year-old woman presented to our clinic with a large mass on the right buccal area with tenderness and hypersensitivity to palpation. The lesion was excised totally under general anesthesia. Microscopic evaluation and immunostaining method confirmed the diagnosis of GVM. We concluded that a solitary form of GVMs as a large mass on the buccal region could occur, and a mass with tenderness and hypersensitivity on palpation could be significant in its differential diagnosis.

Erythrocyte and middle ear effusion malondialdehyde (MDA) level, erythrocyte glutathione (GSH) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GRD) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities were measured in three groups of seven guinea pigs, 3 hours after injection of 0.1 mL of histamine (or saline) into the middle ear in guinea pigs with OME (experimental group), in a dantrolene sodium group and in a control group. Erythrocyte and effusion MDA levels in the dantrolene group were significantly lower than those of the experimental group. Erythrocyte GSH-Px, GST, GRD activities, and GSH levels were...

We investigated antibacterial activity of some otic solutions against the most common bacteria isolated from discharging ears. Three solutions were used (Castellani's, Burrow's, and 2% salicyl alcohol) for 20 fresh isolates of each of the following organisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Enterobacter spp.. The activity of each solution was determined by the size of the zone of inhibition of bacterial growth. The Castellani's solution showed significantly larger average inhibition zones than the other solutions did (p<0.001). The Castellani's solution may be considered a good option against bacterial or mixed infections (bacterial and fungal) of the ear.

Between June 2009 and October 2010, 127 ear cultures were taken from 100 patients who applied to the Department of Otolaryngology of Ataturk University Faculty of Medicine Hospital diagnosed to have chronic otitis media in the otolaryngological investigation. Antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated strains was determined by the disc diffusion method according to the CLSI criteria. From the cultures investigated, 277 (6 ferment and 16 fungus) microorganisms were generated. Among the isolated pathogen microorganisms, pseudomonas spp. (24,91%), staphylococcus spp (13,00%), proteus spp. (5,05%) were the three most frequently isolated pathogen agents. 4 Peptococcus spp. (1,44%) and 3 Peptostreptecoccus spp. (1,08%) multiplied and it was observed th...

Paralysis classification was evaluated with House-Brackman Rating System (HBGS). Patients completed Short Form-36 (SF-36) along with the Turkish version of the FDI and refilled the Turkish FDI one week later. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were analyzed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. Construct validity was assessed by calculating the Spearman's correlation coefficient. Also, exploratory factor analysis was carried out by identifying the factor structure of the scale. Results: After the pre-test of the Turkish FDI, there was no need for linguistic and cultural adaptation. The internal consistency of the physical function subscale was high (0.82). The social/well-being subscale's Cronbach alpha (0.63) was within the acceptable range. Test-retest reliability was excellent (ICC of physical function = 0.91 and social/well-being = 0.93, p < 0.05). The physical function subscale was correlated with the PF subscale of SF-36 and HBGS (r = -0.837 and 0.292, respectively; p < 0.05). Besides, the social/well-being function subscale was correlated with HBGS and all subscales of SF-36, except RP (p < 0.05). Factor analysis results of the Turkish FDI were similar to the other version studies. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the FDI is a valid and reliable questionnaire in patients with peripheral facial paralysis.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONThe Turkish version FDI is the first Turkish tool translated cross-culturally adapted for specific assessment of facial paralysis. The Turkish version of the FDI is a valid and reliable questionnaire and can be used in all native Turkish speaking patients in peripheral facial paralysis. This assessment tool can be used in clinical routine and research settings to evaluate facial paralysis.

All patients had maxillary constriction with a high palatal vault and a conductive hearing loss. Pure-tone audiometric records were used to determine the hearing levels at four time intervals, namely, before RME, after sufficient midpalatal suture opening was obtained (mean: 18 days), after the retention period (mean: six months), and a final set two years after the retention period. Records were evaluated by the same otolaryngologist. Analysis of variance was used to assess the changes in the hearing level and the air-bone gap. Descriptive statistics were calculated for each subject at each period. The results indicated that significant changes occurred in both the hearing levels and air-bone gaps in both timing and frequency after the active treatment period (P < .001). For most patien...
