A recently published encyclopedia of environmental history reflects both the strengths and weaknesses attending this growing field of study. The encyclopedia succeeds in showing that natural forces constrain and structure human history. But it is less successful at exploring the interface between environment and social relations, as evidenced in its treatment of political economy, free trade, and natural disasters.
