A qualitative research design used in-depth interviews and classroom observations with 7 African American women teachers in technical schools and community colleges. The results were that the teachers' positionality affected their experiences by (a) producing a teaching philosophy based on a history of marginalization, (b) raising issues of credibility with students because of the teachers' race and gender, and (c) directly affecting their classroom interactions and teaching strategies. It was concluded that there are no generic teachers but, rather, teachers whose experiences are affected positively and negatively by their positionality in society.

Prior to this course, I thought of the two as being each other’s extreme opposite. In fact, while processing the assignment the comparing and contrasting of traditional versus progressive education came to mind. According to this inquiry, Dewey (1938) suggests that mankind likes to think in terms of extreme opposites. It is given to formulating its beliefs in terms of Either-Ors, between which it recognizes no intermediate possibilities. Argyris’s process of organizational learning and Senge’s process of learning organization are not sufficient alone to ensure and sustain organization learning.
