In this approach the total energy loss from the present instant over the next hour is minimized. The method uses the load forecast during this period. All the continuous and discrete control variables are adjusted on an hourly basis. During the

This includes both "conventional" software as well as environments based on the use of expert systems. One major area has not received much attention until very recenty: data-base management. In this paper, we define a framework for database management, describe a set of design assumptions and corresponding functional requirements, and describe several roles that an expert system can play in this activity.

This new approach builds on the variable delay time estimator technique applied to time-variable flow processe s. The present work has improved the approach proposed by Sayda and Taylor (1) in one important respect: the time delay prediction method presented here eliminates the adverse transient spikes that occurred due to uncertainty i n the variable time delay, i.e., it removes unwanted transien ts caused by miscalculation of the forced response inside the controller. The efficacy and robustness of this technique is demonstrated by controlling a pulp bleaching process using a model predictive control algorithm with a variable delay- time estimator embedded in that controller.
